What Critters have you run across while camping, not riding, but sitting at the campfire and one just walks by you...

If there are some I'm missing, just post and I'll add them to the poll...

Up here on the north coast we tend to call Opossum a Woodchuck. It may not be the same exact critter, but someone might be able to confirm or correct that.

Joe, you need to add Raccoons! Those little cuties are always around when I camp.... that and Skunks (at least that what I tell the wife when she get a whif of something stinky).

In Iowa, a woodchuck is sometimes called a groundhog. An opossum is called ugly.:D

Years ago my girlfriend and I were camping next to a pond on a friend's ranch near Big Wells, TX. In the middle of the night a loud squeal woke me up. The squeal was loud, but it was also suddenly cut off. At first I thought that something had killed a javalina. A few minutes later I heard grunts and noises around the tent so I looked out, expecting to see the herd of javalina. Nope. It was a herd of wild hogs, and they were much larger and not near as timid as javalina. Then it occurred to me that something very large had probably just killed a hog. Hmmm...It was hard to go back to sleep. The next morning back at the camp house I told my dad what happened. He said, "Oh, I saw a cougar down by the pond a couple of days ago. Sorry, I forgot to tell you." Well, if I had know that a cougar was there I sure as heck wouldn't have picked that for a camping spot.

I needed to answer the call of nature at about 2:00am last week at Cheaha State Park and headed up the road to the picnic pavilion's bathroom. Apparently my moto boots sounded similar enough to deer hooves coming up the road that the herd of deer foraging around the pavilion didn't shy away. When I was approx 35feet away I noticed several does and then the whole herd of about 30 to 40. I looked at them and they looked at me and all was calm until I said "what y'all doing?" You couldn't have scared them more if you had fired a gun. They ran off over the mountain in the direction of the full service campsites and sounded like a cattle stampede. I wonder if they had any effect on the campers in tents over there. It sure would be a rude awakening to have a herd come running through next to your tent at 2:00am.

Or... considering what a great job they do of avoiding motorcycles on the road... it sure would be a rude awakening to have the herd come running right through your tent at 2:00 AM.

I can't believe that birds aren't No. 1. You see birds every where, even on the way to camping, that and squirrals

That's a good point, I guess we don't regard birds as much of a threat, unless they are 20lb Texas Turkey Buzzards....

I've hit a few birds on the Wing and you aren't even aware of it. I see a deer and I'm VERY aware of it, if I'm lucky.

I just crossed Nebraska two weeks ago on I-80 and was surprised to see both live and squashed turkeys on the side of the road. A turkey is also a pretty big bird and I would not want to tangle with one. I read somewhere that interstates attract birds like these turkeys because of all the dead bugs killed by the cars and trucks.

Hey Joe!

After CampSTOC you need to add owls to the poll. The pictures came out! Impressive considering it was pretty dark. I'll post them later.

Edit: I know it's a bird but... you just don't see these often in the wild.

Cool, can't wait to see them, I've seen owls before, but usually the grey colored ones sitting on a fence post... The brown color of that owl was quite a sight.

Alligators, which aren't a big deal to run up on one in the deep south.

I wasn't motor camping but was mountain bike camping,,,
I was doing the natures call thing late one night in a real remote area
and, with my petzl headlamp, spotted eyes shining through the woods about
100' away.
Keeping the light trained in the critters eyes they started slowly creeping closer and it turned out to be a bobcat. My first to ever see.
I guess through curiosity the cat gradually crept to within about 20-30' of me and being as motionless as I could be and keeping the light in his eyes, we had a stare down for about 10-15 minutes. I could literally hear my own heart pounding, it was a real weird feeling I had never had before, or since. I suppose it was the not knowing what was going to happen.
After a long while the bobcat finally turned around and slowly eased back into the woods.

A mountain lion, cougar, Florida panther, and puma are all the same animal. In fact, mountain lions from Colorado were introduced in Florida some years back to supplement the gene pool for the remaining Florida panthers.
