Just curious what the most popular one is, I've heard a lot about MSR bottle.

Any other options or is that the best? I'm basically talking about liquid fuel.

Joe, MSR style fuel bottles are great. Some other brands look the same and may even have the same exact thread for the caps & other fittings. I have a couple of these bottles from my backpacking days and use them for weekend trips with any of my white gas stoves. You can also store unleaded gas in them for dual fuel stoves, or for those emergency situations on the road when a pint of gas will get you to the next filling station.

These bottles are almost indestructable. The only part to watch is the rubber o-ring, which will dry out and crack after a few years. Replacement o-rings are easy to find on all of the camping supply websites & camping stores.

I have been known to store a bottle in my saddlebag for roadside use (unleaded gas). Last summer nearly had to use the extra fuel as we were riding on sailboat fuel (wind) right until we found a gas station in the Adirondacks. We just made it!

I too have used the MSR fuel bottles. They work great I normally take 2 with me when camping. IIRC 1 is a 33oz and 1 is a 20oz. The 33oz has unleaded in it incase someone runs out of gas, but so far we've never needed it. The other has diesel fuel in it. A little diesel on an old sock makes a great way to start a camp fire, and is a ton safer than using unleaded. I've had the 33oz leak before due to a worn out o-ring. Now I store the bottles in an upright position on the outside of my pack.

Joe MSR bottles work great and I have never had a issue.

I've had a nice Sigg 1 L bottle for almost 20 years now, and it's been flawless.
I bought it to go with my Optimus 123 stove when I lived in the Alberta Rockies in the 80's.
Some time after that I bought a MSR Whisperlight International stove, which came
with a nice fuel bottle.
I would recomend either. the Sigg bottle does have quite a stout gasket around the cap
compared to the MSR bottle, so it will likely last longer. Nothing worse than finding stinky
gas on your gear when you arrive at camp.

MSR, Sigg, Primus

All these seem to be popular and reasonably well made.

My question is about filling them with unleaded from the gas pump?

Is the opening large enough to fit the nozzle inside?

Can they be filled easily without spilling?

Just wondering if one is any better than the other in that regard.

I have no problem filling them from the pump. Just take it slow and stop at the line so there is room for expansion.
I started out with a look alike and actually had the cap start to disolve from the inside. Make sure you buy one that is designed to carry fuel. The 33oz fits nicely in a fire extinguisher bracket.

I recently got a screaming deal on a few MSR bottles at OutDoorDaily.com They have a deal of the day with one of them being MSR bottles for something like $4.00 each. When I ordered them I got an additional discount for being a first time customer. I know with shipping it was less than $3.00/bottle so I ordered 6.......should have ordered a few dozen as I see them go on Evilbay for $16-18.00 plus shipping! Guess I shouldn't be greedy as I sure there are others who need them too.

Gee Mike, what a novel place to hang a FUEL bottle!

I'm using one of the MSR-lookalike bottles from the local thrift store, but I'm only carrying denatured alcohol.

I was told it burns better if you warm it up. ;)
Actually, I just did that to show how it fits in the fire extinguisher bracket. I actually carry mine in a portable liquor cabinet on the sidecar.

You may just get that chance. I have a brother in Gilbert, haven't seen him in years. I'm planning to make a trip up there this summer.

Would welcome the chance to meet and spend some time with you. I'll just have to keep a close eye on you when you mix a drink for me.......:D

;) I have another liquor cabinet for the good stuff. ;)
Always have some Jagermeister, some Rye Whiskey, and, of course, a bit of Dr. McGillicuddy's Medicinal Schnapps.

Thanks for the info, I went with the 50oz. (1.5L) primus. I had received a sale offer for those and I got the last 2

MSR makes a really nice product for the price. I've had mine for two years now and the only thing I notices was some paint was coming off due to rubbing on a bolt head. Other than that it was perfect.

I agree. I have seen some that looked like they had been dragged behind the bike a few miles and still seemed to hold up very well.
