View Full Version : My Ride Today

Hi,
I was thinking we needed a thread where we could post a pic of something we saw on a short ride. Sometimes my wife will ask me to go get something, but instead of going to the store 10 miles away, I go to the store 130 miles away and see something along the way and take a pic of it. If you've got something like that, share it here with the rest of us.
Here's my first pic. It got up to a sweltering 38 degrees today, so I hit the backroads and found this bridge that the county finally redecked. It's been out for months.
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_eAeUVzxF-uc/Samp4SwL9mI/AAAAAAAAAgg/zuZ7N9FNJYE/s640/PICT0132.JPG
Ok, that's mine, anyone else got something to share. Let's keep it to one pic at a time and a short story or caption to go with it.
Thanks, Guy

We ended up just getting a dusting of snow that blew away. It was in the upper 20's this morning but warmed up to the 30's. I got a ride in, but one of my favorite roads was a tad bit muddy for the tires I have on! Got home after dark and it had dropped back into the 20's. :cold1:

On my ride over the weekend, I had one of those moments you don't really look forward to. Came through a little traffic, the road narrows from 2 lanes to 1, and getting ready to merge in front of me is this....
http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh55/rcscott123/DSC05608.jpg
If you can't tell, the trailer is loaded with pigs. Quickly accelerated and got in front of him before the merge, thankfully.

I've been to Devil's Den. It's probably my favorite campground in the area. It's also where I learned (accidentally) exactly how far my bike will go before it runs out of gas...

That's a good thing to know! I need to load up my gas can and see how far mine will go on a tank of gas.

I've got a story, I need to share.
I went on a rampage here today, couldn't find my favorite pair of blue jeans. No place, no how. I tore my house apart. Finally went out and checked my camping gear. Sure enough, in a bag in a bag, there they are. Ugh, I haven't camped since middle of January. I either need to camp more or go someplace to wear my favorite jeans every now and again:)
I'm going to try to post a picture of me with hair. It's one I scanned into my system yesterday, entirely un related.

Went for a little ride today and went through Shawnee Ok. I stopped at the old train depot there, one of the few depots built of stone in Oklahoma.

Hi,
We're having a heck of a lot of grass fires here today, so I thought I'd get out and ride about a 10 mile radius around where my house is at to see if I could spot any fires. Along the way I came across the old Pleasant Grove school house. These old school houses are all over Ok.

Hi, Guy
Not sure where you are in relation to the fire. Hope you and family are out of harms way. Take care.:)
Mr. Guy

Nearest fires were about 7 miles north, with a wind out of the SW, we weren't really in any danger. Over 100 homes were destroyed in Midwest City though. I hope every one out your way is being careful about wildfires too. California seems to go up in flames as much as we do every spring. Everybody take care with their campfires, no matter what the season.

Went on a little ride today with my son Jeffrey, we went to meet up with some guys from ST-Owners.com. They had a ride-to-eat at Lucille's Restaurant in Mulhall, Ok. Made for a little over 180 miles from home and back. Jeff's longest ride to date and a little rain thrown in for good measure. A few of the guys I had met before on another RTE to Talihena Ok last October and met some new guys today. All in all a good day ride.

Yeah, but went no where in particular. Went on a few rides. Just rode to get our butts in condition for our big ride coming up. Have been doing a lot of modifications to the Urals for the dogs, especially for Audrey. She needs to ride in comfort. You know she 's a little Miss Pris.;:p Every time we start up the bikes they come running and want to hope in. Funny as heck. You take care and tell Jeff to find any excuse, (with mom and dad's permission of course), to ride.:D Have bookmarked that web site about the building. Love old history and origins about things.

in the small town of raduim hot springs there are many big horn sheep , they hang around town all year long . its not uncommon to see 60 of them wandering on the main street , there are alot in my small town as well , they tend to spend alot of time munching on the grass in front of the motels on the hyway strip . lately they have been catching them and helicoptering them into the mountains to start new herds

I plan on passing through Radium Hot Springs in late June on my way back from Prince Rupert. Now my dreams will be haunted by dodging Big Horn Sheep on the road! :D
I hope to camp somewhere around Jasper, before heading south to Washington and my daughter's place. Any advise on camping around Jasper?

although its not on your direct route , east of jasper there is a hot springs , its still inside the park and there is a campsite near it , im going to camp there in may . i will post photos , its about 30 klm east of the town of jasper , there are a lot of campsites within the park . some close to the town . in raduim the government campsite is called dry gultch . its quite nice with a trail too the hot springs . radium is an hour south of where i live , but the climate and terrain change alot . the area is dryer and the trees far apart . there are hodoos and grass lands . if you come from prince rupert via prince george . there is one stretch of hyway from p.g. too the town of mcbride that has no fuel stops , so be sure to fill up , my honda xrl 650 with a aftermarket 16 litre tank would be bone dry upon arriveing . in prince rupert be sure too check out the old part of town called cow bay , water front pub has fresh halibut and chips , and you can watch the fisherman bring them ashore from the patio

My ST1300 can do about 300 miles on a tank full, so I should be OK. I had already planned on filling up in Prince George, thanks for the warning.
My ferry into Prince Rupert arrives at 0430, so I will probably be long gone before the waterfront pub opens.:D

Loved Mr. Guy's pic of the train station in Shawnee, OK (http://www.motocampers.com/forums/showpost.php?p=18841&postcount=15).
One of the biggest motivators behind my love of motorcycling is the desire to just wander and see what's over the next hill. When I was a teenager I loved to do the same thing but most of the bikes I had at that time weren't particularly reliable (mostly older Triumphs),... that is until I got my first brand new Honda 305 Superhawk (http://users.hal-pc.org/~mmcham/305hawk.html). Then I began to hit the road in earnest and explore a bit of the country close to home. When I left home at the tender age of 17 in 1965, I sold my bike and that was the end of my motorcycle career for many years. Fast foward to the 1990's when my lifestyle and finances allowed me to indulge my wanderlust yet again. It was as if I had picked back up where I left off so I continued my wandering but further afield this time around.
The pictures below, though not exactly "My Ride Today" are just a few examples of the interesting places that I have run across in the last few years. I've been all over the US on my motorcycles but some of my favorite pictures are of places that I've stumbled across here in my own state.

Yesterday I took off solo. The Princess was going to see some of the grandchildren after work, so I took off just before noon.
Forecast was for rain... and lots of it, but I needed a ride. I didn't know if I was coming back or staying overnight so I took a sleeping bag (for a KOA Kamping Kabin), clothes, dehydrated food and some water. I also took my heated vest and gloves. 75 degrees is fine, but 61 degrees in a driving rain can stand a little extra heat! About the Kamping Kabins... setting up tents and breaking down tents in heavy rain is a real joy-stealer. So I didn't bother to take the tent.
I started toward the Smoky Mountains... like most of the time. It was heavily overcast, but I didn't care. I slipped off I-40 at Crab Orchard and took Hwy 70 east. This time I stopped at Ozone Falls State Natural Area. It was impressive. I'll take better pictures next time. This time there was a bunch of ladies having lunch in the good picture spots.

The rain started getting closer so I took off. I took a detour a little ways down the road and rode up Roosevelt Mountain to see the view down into the valley.

The Princess called on the cell phone about the time I was eating. She said that there were tornado warnings and severe thunderstorm warnings for the counties south of Nashville and along the Alabama line. It sounded rough, but I rode home anyway. The storms were supposed to be "training" through the whole area for the next several days. I figured I could stop along the way if I needed to.
It was quite stormy most of the way home. I saw three tractor-trailers that had run off the Interstate (or had been blown off it) on the climb back up the Cumberland Plateau. It rained so hard at one point that I pulled off the Interstate at Harriman and waited about 20 minutes. I didn't take any pictures in the rain. I didn't want to get caught up in a wreck.
I got home, no worse for the rain... and not even wet under my riding clothes! That heated liner and gloves are the "bomb-diggedy!P^

Well, not really a ride today as much as the same ride over and over. The company where I work decided about 6 weeks ago that in order to save a little money they weren't going to let us take our work trucks home any more. So I've been riding 3 or 4 days a week since then and already have 2300 more miles on the bike. I guess I'll make it to 50,000 faster than I thought. LOL

I got in a little ride today, nowhere special. Went to the local Harley dealer with a bud so he could check out a new helmet, then went to Gander Mountain to look at some camping gear. Ended up eating at Waffle House before heading home with the temps in the mid 40's.

When I was looking the bike over prior to buying it the wife asked me, "What are those things bolted on to the back"? I explained they are for "Detachable" back rests and luggage racks. As I was working out the details of the purchase, I noticed the wife was no where to be found. Just as I was getting ready to sign my name, the wife came walking up with a back rest in her hand, and said "Be sure and add this to the sale". :p Gotta love her! :)

I took off from work a little early and was out riding around when I thought "I wonder if the motorcycle museum is open yet." So I headed that way to see and it is. Seaba Station is a little service station that opened in 1921 along old Route 66 in the tiny town of Warwick, Ok. It closed in 1996 and was an antique store for a while before bought by Gerald Tims who owns Performance Motorcycles in Bethany Ok., a Suzuki and Triumph dealer. If your riding near here, stop in as the museum does not charge admission and runs solely on donations. They have a few Triumphs from the early 1900s including a 1909 Type A and a 1979 Bonneville STILL in the crate. Yes, in the crate.
This Sunday 10-17-2010 they are having a Sunday brunch and vintage motorcycle show and are expecting over 100 vintage motorcycles. I may have more pics to put up tomorrow.

My son, Jeff, and I rode up to the Seaba Station Motorcycle Museum today for the vintage bike show. Not as many bikes as I thought would showed up for the show, but that's okay, it was free after all.
Here's a pic of the 1909 Triumph Type A:
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_eAeUVzxF-uc/TLtcm-kVI9I/AAAAAAAABYU/XmI9iAz8ybI/s720/Photo0036.jpg
And here's a early model of a Dual-Sport bike:
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_eAeUVzxF-uc/TLtaqCB2EeI/AAAAAAAABYM/-yQdEqbfYqw/Photo0035.jpg
And Black and Blue might notice a little heritage with a couple of the bikes they ride:
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_eAeUVzxF-uc/TLtVZ0NofEI/AAAAAAAABYA/wOD1oHxpFfg/Photo0033.jpg
There were more bikes of spectators than bikes in the show and people were walking around talking and looking at what everyone rode to the show on. That was as good as the show itself.

Looks like the wood was replaced within the last 5-8 years to me. Some are built by local municipalities and are turned over to larger ones like county or state, then there is no interest in remodeling unless it's historic. It's happening here in Atlanta too.

A little less than half way there we met up with chadws and took a leasurely slow pace on the back highways of OK to what is one of my favorite parts of Oklahoma, the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. We rode around looking at the sites and Jeff and theDog hiked up a small mountain while we were there, I waited with the bikes with Chad. I used to do that until some of my potential clients decided that if I could afford an expensive bike like that then I must be charging too much. My ride today, no camping. Seems we've been camping every weekend lately was good to have a weekend off. A bunch of us did meet up at Hell's Kitchen on Ortega Hwy. for breakfast though. Weather was perfect (83 degree's) and everyone seemed to be out on there motorcycles. I feel that every brand of motorcycle was represented today. Saw just about every bike you never see was out enjoying the day. There were 2 Ducati Diavil's. got to sit on one, AWSOME bike. 2 of the new V-max's, and a Honda Rune. Had a GREAT breakfast and good conversation before a couple of us headed into Temecula for Temecula Motorsports open house. Today we get to ride any Victory as many times as we chose. Me having a GL1800 GoldWing I wanted to see what the Vision was all about. Our time came and just as we were ready to depart my friend Mikes bike seemed to be stuck in 3rd gear. He was out and the group left without him. GREAT ride up into the Santa Rosa Platue above Temecula. Was a fairly long ride im guessing lasted around 35-40 minutes. My first opinion of the Vision, where's all the power this BIG 106 ci. motor is suppose to be making. At first I thought it was running on just one cylinder. Nope. that is what its suppose to do. The transmission was very clunky. Always found the gear but had to make a lot of noise doing it. The Vision is GREAT in the courners, handles very well I absolutely the way it handled. Was a GREAT ride but was very disappointed not even close to the Wing. The Vision I rode was also a Arlen Ness Special Addition ($28,999 + Tax and license and prep.) with all the bells and whistles. No thanks, i'll keep the Wing.
GREAT day, GREAT friends, GREAT food, and a free ride on someone else's bike. P^
