I'm planning several three-day camping trips for this year, and I'm looking at the Red River Gorge in the Daniel Boone National Forest of Eastern Kentucky for a motorcycle camping/nature photography adventure. Anybody camped there? Recommendations for the area? Thanks for your insight.

Brent sad to say living in KY, I haven't spent a lot of time in this part of the state on a motorcycle. I have ridden ATV's in Evarts KY which is in the far eastern part of the state and it is beautiful country there. I have talked to folks who have ridden in the area you are talking about and they really enjoyed themselves, said there was some great riding there. Road Runner magazine had an article about a ride they took in this part of the state. You might check their website and see if they have some back issue articles. Hang on, here it is.

It's just a preview but has a picture gallery, where you can check out some pics.

Thanks for that link, Steve.

I am a RoadRunner subscriber and remember that article. Chris Myers did a nice job. He told me once that the Honda 650XL is his favorite motorcycle. I wrote six articles for RoadRunner, 2005-08. The latest RoadRunner has a dual-sport Shamrock tour in Ohio. It's a good read.

What I am looking for is first-hand information about the Red River Gorge. I know the roads around that area are going to be great.

DBrent..I think I know you. I have worked at a lot of the motorcycle shops in the area (Moto East Yamaha, East of the Mississipi (formerly Gentleman Jims), Honda of Batavia, Honda Suzuki of Florence to name a few) and if you've been riding awhile I'm sure we have crossed paths. I also used to work with a guy named Brent Miller but I don't think you're the same fella.

Anyhow, I have ridden to the Gorge many times over the years. Rt 89 out of Paris Ky is a great road... You can get to Paris by taking 27 out of Alexandria, thru Cynthiana to Paris (doing this by memory so search Google Maps to verify) and 11 north thru Daniel Boone Nat'l forest if also a great road. I can't remember much about the campgrounds at the Gorge itself althought there is plenty of camping in the area. We have primitive camped by motorcycle at the Gorge but that was 35 years ago. The last time I was there with my wife (2003) we stayed at a motel as she is no longer into camping.

At any rate there are plenty of awesome roads in that area and you will enjoy yourself riding in that area.

PS check out the website

especially the "reasons to ride" forum for lots of good riding roads in this area.

Thanks, Ferrett. We may have crossed paths, but I have not had too many people working for me, especially in recent years. I've only been in the Cincinnati area for a little more than two years. Originally from Illinois, I lived in South Bend, Indiana, for 14 years before coming to Ohio.

Thanks also for the link to Ohio Riders. I am a member, but haven't participated too much. It's good to be reminded.

How about picking a weekend and making this a Motocampers event? I have been to the Gorge but would love to go back and explore some more roads in the area, and it a 4-5 hour trip from here. An easy ride over on friday after work.

Sounds okay with me. I was thinking late April, and looking at the Koomer Camp Ground. It should be low traffic. There are 54 camp sites with a centrally-located public showers. Map: http://www.fs.fed.us/r8/boone/districts/cumberland/koomer.pdf.
