Last year Chief and I did half of the TAT (Ride Report (http://www.motocampers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1472)) and this year we planned to do the West half Utah to Oregon. Chief had a few things come up and will not be able to make it this year. Sorry man sure will miss ya!

However Flingshot and I will still be going as planed. We will start at the Utah border on September 21st and head West for to the coast. After reading most of the TAT ride reports it appears to take anywhere from 8 to 11 days for this run. I can not get away from work more than 2 weeks so I will only have ten days of TAT time but if all goes well that should be enough time. I will truck my bike to CO from Houston so if anyone near the UT/CO border has a place I can park for a few weeks please let me know. We also plan to ride back from the OR coast to CO on the bikes.

We will be camping most if not all nights and hopefully some night out in the middle of nowhere. If anyone wants to join us, feel free to let us know.

Thanks guys, my Wing has been on a couple of dirt roads in AZ that I can't believe I made it in and back out on. The reason I came back the same way was because of this big high 15' gate in the 8' fence at the end of the road. And I was pulling my little trailer!!! Through two water crossings. That makes four total 'cause I had to go back through them.

Looks like fun, but they say the west part is pretty tough. The part I road was tough enough. Ya'll have fun. Trailace is a great ride leader, anyone going should have a helluva time.

OK, I'm thinking about picking up a used DRZ 400(2001) to play in the dirt out here in CA. Is it big enough to do the TAT on? I won't get a look at this thing until Monday, so I don't know much about them. I know, I don't want to ride the KLR across country. I know I don't want to get a trailer and haul the KLR out here either. So, talk me out of getting the DR.

Chief

The DRZ would be great for the trail. The getting there and back would be the hard part on a DRZ.

I would love to have one for the dirt!

So which border of Utah are you meeting at? I've got a lot of things to do before September and that includes trips back to Ohio. All my camping gear is back there and the soft bags for the KLR, and I think they will work on the DRZ. My Motofizz bag will work as a top box.

And I probably won't be getting a DRZ, since I would have to put lights on it to make it street legal. So back to the ads.

OK, I'm in!!! I picked up a 2001 DRZ 400 S with 700 miles on it today. Wow, what a bike!!! I really think it could give the KLR a bit of a run for its money. Hard to believe this is just a 400 cc bike. Pictures to follow later.

Here it is. And yeah that's liquid sunshine all over the parking lot and I-8. It does very well on the slab at indicated 80. I think the wiggles I got on rain grooves are more tire than bike problem. Tires still have the nubs on them.

Trailace
02-16-2009, 11:23 PM
Cool your going to love that bike. I tried to buy one two times b-4 I got the X but both times they had DR650s not a DRZ400.

motomac
02-16-2009, 11:37 PM
I have to get a couple things on it before the TAT. I have soft bags for the KLR, so I just need racks, skid plate, foot pegs, and hand guards. I have been reading stuff on ThumperTalk and it seems the side cases need beefed up on the engine, so I'll do that. I don't particularly like the brand new tires on it, so they may be replaced a couple of times before Sept. It has a big plastic tank, don't know which one it is or how big it is, but it is made so the tank actually protects the radiator in the event it gets tired and takes a nap.

Time is ticking down and before we know it will be time to go. I started working on the GPS tracks last week and after about 30 hours of work Utah is done. I'm sure there will be lost (Lot's) of stops to check out the maps on this section. :p

Here is what it looks like on the map. 480 miles
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/550024601_w7GLj-L.jpg

I gave us 3 days to do Utah and found a campground for each night. That's about 160 miles a day give or take. Mac and Scott what is the range of your tanks? I can almost do all of Utah on one tank. ;)

About 111 days and dropping. :D

Hey Rick,

Riding hard I can still get around two hundred with my new tank so I should be good. I am getting pretty stir crazy over here. From August 1 to October 31, I have no softball, no coaching, no dance lessons (my girls not me), and unfortunately not much work so I guess I'll take advantage of the down time and ride.P^

Got called in to work today, very few of the materials we needed were on site like they were supposed to be before I drove 40 miles to get there, finished what I could, went home, took one daughter to a birthday party, one to a sleepover, the little one was bummed because she couldn't do anything so I took her swimming only to find out that the rec. center was closed for cleaning. Left this am at 6 and just got home at 8:20.

What is the longest mileage between fuel stops.
Will we be using Hilton or Marriott hotels?
What is the plan for the return leg?

Thanks guys --- Ron (Arlo)

I think the Vstrom 1000 will be a hand full on this ride and would take the 600. The 690 would be a good bike for this but only if you can upgrade the fuel tank.

OK I just mapped out all the gas station on the route and the longest distant between stations is 181 miles. That being said here are gallons needed by MPG.

35 MPG = 5.2 Gallons needed.
40 MPG = 4.5 Gallons needed.
45 MPG = 4.0 Gallons needed.
50 MPG = 3.6 Gallons needed.
55 MPG = 3.3 Gallons needed.
60 MPG = 3.0 Gallons needed.

Checks your tank size and plan accordingly.

Hi Rick
How many legs are 180 mi? What is the next longest leg? How many legs are over 150 nm? I know you've spent an average dogs lifetime on the maps already, but it would help in planning. I'm going to leave the Prius at home and bring the XR600. I think the tank is approx 4 gal. Mabey I can fill my tires with gas - my buddy does that on his ROCON! A whole new dimension to flat tires. Like the Exxon Valdez -only with refined product.

Arlo
08-22-2009, 12:02 AM
P.S. -We are 100% in. My buddy Phil is also in. He has decided to ride his XR600. Same 4 gal tank as mine. We may have to take separate trucks as we may come back at a scenic pace thru Or and Ca as we don't have to be back as soon. I've heard Oct is prime Sasquatch viewing in Or. I'm planning on using Phil as bait -but don't tell him!

Here is the break down on fuel stops as best as I can tell.

Utah
Start full tank! Monticello
1. 85 Miles Moab
2. 85 Miles Green River
3. 150 Miles Salina
4. 21 Miles (could skip) Richfield
5. 37 Miles Kanosh
6. 120 Miles UT/NV border on US 50

Nevada
Tank will be full from last stop in UT
7. 125 miles Preston
8. 92 Miles Eureka
9. 128 Miles Battle Mtn
10. 150 or 170 if we stop at Paradise Valley (No gas in PV good place to eat. However if we do the Hinkey Summit bypass it would be a 155 mile leg ) McDermitt
11. 66 Miles Denio Jct

Oregon
When we start OR we will have about 138 miles on this tank. The gas station in Fort Bidwell is closed so we need to make it to Lakeview OR. (Longest leg of gas 180 miles)
12. 180 miles Lakeview
13. 122 miles Silver Lake
14. 68 Miles Gilchrist
15. 137 miles Tiller
16. 70 miles Quines Creek
17. 140 miles Port Orford
The end

Hope this helps.

If you two are going to have more time I guess I’m back to just riding my bike to the starting point and changing my tires there.

Ok since my time is limited I was thinking maybe we could start on Sunday Sep 20th instead of the 21st.

That means I would have to ride 1200 miles in a day and a half but the extra day on the trail would sure be nice and maybe I could use it on the long ride home. Let me know what you think.

I had a couple over 850 days on the KLR and had I known the gas station in Coldfoot was open on the return from Prudhoe, I would have gone on to Faribanks instead of stopping at the campground north of Coldfoot for an SS 1000 on the Dalton.

There is no place to get gas between Green River and Salina on the Interstate, so I imagine it will be the same off road.

Start the TAT on the 20th and be done on the 30th or 1st. We will have to avg about 165 miles a day. That should give us time to enjoy the ride. Last year we avg 231 miles a day and I never felt like we were pushing to hard. Our two shortest days were 150 and 148 miles.

He called but they were ordering food and it was noisy, I think he said he was only 150 further than the last location, I assume still in Utah.

He said there was lots of mud in that area and some big rocks. I suppose I'll get an update today.

Sure wish he would have gotten a SPOT (http://www.findmespot.com/en) in time for the trip.

A broken toe doesn't necessarily mean a broken ride. Depends on which toe and how it's broken. Let's wait for the update.

I think it may have been a couple toes and cut down to the bone. They are getting a u-haul. 2 of them are finishing the ride to the coast then they are taking a pic of all 3 w/bikes on the beach before heading back.

If I remember right Rick paid money to catch a shuttle to the Arctic Ocean when he was in Prudhoe so he could stick his toe in the frigid water.

They were in Ely, NV last night... Some cold weather/snow was behind them so they were trying to make sure they would out-run it. They are in a u-haul truck. Looks like they may have some lower temps and rain today through Utah but nothing real bad.

I just happen to know that they won't gamble too much in Ely, NV on a week night. Not too much going on. Pretty good riding and 4x4ing, but the gambling, not so much:)
