I was thinking of using these this summer as I will be changing tires while on the road. Theory and application seems simple enough, I was just wondering if they are too good to be true. Anyone here use them?

Steve, they get talked about the the GoldWing pages.

Some think they are great, and other feel they aren't worth the powder to blow them up.

Good luck

Thanks Clamper, I'll check that thread. I'm looking for an easy way to balance tires while traveling.

I haven't balanced my last 3 sets of tires. I just put some tire goo of one sort or another in them. Does a pretty good job, but I don't ride to fast either.

Guy I have been lucky in the past with tubeless wheels by just lining up the dot on the tire with the valve stem, but I noticed on my Strom the front wheel seems to have lots of weights on it. I'm hoping who ever mounted it was just too lazy to deflate the tire and rotate it on the wheel so it would take less weight to balance it. I'll find out this summer!

Yea, I've had some trouble with tire shops in the past also. With the kind of service I was getting, I just started to mount my own tires and don't have a balance stand. Therefore the tire goo solution.

Used "balancing beads" with my last tire change, before our trip on Rt 66 last summer. I ride GL1800 and am one of the crazies :eek:that has a bias Bridgestone Battlaxe 45R on the front and a run-flat Continental Pro-Conti car tire on the back. Put 3oz in the rear and 2 oz in the front. Perfect balance and ride the last 12000 miles. :)

I'm going to give them a try with the next tire change and see how they do!

I used them for my last tire change on the Wee. They seem to be working fine.

WWells,
Just curious ... what kind of tire millage are you getting from a car tire compaired to a motorcycle tire? And does it handle as well in the corners?

Hey sorry to be so long answering. The mileage is hard to nail down. Pulling the loaded trailer, 2/up, in heavy cross winds with tourist "stop and go", across to Southern Calif. the mileage varied a lot.

However, I seem to get 3-4 mpg less since I put the CT on. I run 27-28 psi in the CT as opposed to 40 psi in the Dunlops that were on it. THe MPG loss could also be related to the change from premium to unleaded/ethanol mix sold around here. That said... I am well pleased because of the increase in stability. I am now unaware of any handling difference. I do remember I noticed turns requiring a little more pressure in the countersteering. Gravel, sand, water, slush... much more stable now. Highway speeds are great. Twisties are still good, but I'm not a maniac on the twisties... even though I do scrub my pegs sometimes.

As far as mileage on the tire... I have about 10,000 miles on the tire. I tend to change tires BEFORE I have to, but I still expect to get 28-30,000 miles out of it.

I hope this helps.

I went to Dyna Beads about a year ago. The reason being was that I choose not to have any external wheel weights on my GL1800 rims.
They work as advertised.
I will use them on all of my motorcycles.

If you do your own tire changes, be aware that you shouldn't use too much lubricant on the rims when installing the tires. Dyna Beads can get clumped up in the lubricant and seriously throw your balance off. I usually mount my tires one day leaving the valve core out overnight and then install the beads the next day. Works good for me.

Do we need to mention that you shouldn't use the "goop" to seal tire leaks if you use balancing beads? Well... whether or not it needs to be mentioned... it has been.

Thanks for the tip Gordon!

wwells, I wondered the same thing about plugging a tire with string type plugs.

I carry a tire plug kit with me everywhere. The Night Train is tubless in the rear, tubed in the front. If I ever get a flat on the rear I'm going to plug it to get me home. The front....I'll be walking...

plug it to limp home, then replace the tire. Don't ride at hwy speeds.

Another option is Ride-On.

Not only does it claim to help balance, but also protects from punctures.

I've seen it do some amazing things!

The wife and I put Ride-On in all of our tires of our Urals before our trip to Alaska. The Ride-On did great as a tire balancer and helped reduce air leaks from our Russian (cheaply made) inner tubes. Had a flat, but the Ride-On couldn't help due to the nature of the hole.

Use them in my RT tubeless, in my VStrom tubeless and in my KLR tubes. The beads work great IMO. I have a Parnes balancer and have balanced wheels for years. You can see all sort of debate on DynaBeads over on ADVRider.com. Those who use them for the most part say they work just fine, as do I. Some deny that they have any redeeming value and are a waste of money. I'd suggest you read up on them, try some, they are cheap and anyone can get them into a tire. Judge for yourself. Won't take much of a ride to see for yourself. I intend to keep using them on all 3 bikes. Good luck.

I finally took them out of my front truck tires.... and my truck drives better now... I have yet to try these on MC tires but not too thrilled with the auto-application. I did use the recommended amount based on tire size so that's not the issue...

Hey Ziggy,
Did you get your Dyna Beads in yet? What do you think? Do they work?

I went to the "Darkside" (using a car tire) on my '07 Gold Wing 1800 last fall. I was planning to use the beads also but tried it first without. My installer (Honda Village on Plainfield in GR Michigan) did such a great job of balancing the tire that I haven't even put the beads in yet. I have about 6K miles on the CT and will NEVER go back to a MC tire. The advantages FAR outweigh the disadvantages. "Disadvantages?, I haven't found ny yet!"

Larry K. (aka: michigancamper)

Larry, I'm so sorry for not updating this thread. I put them in a set of Tourances before I left for AK last summer. I took a ride without them first and felt just a tiny amount of vibration. Put them in through the stem and they worked great, although when I put them in the TKC80s when I changed out tires in AK I just dumped them in the tire before I mounted it. Much quicker and easier! P^ The only negative thing I can say about them is I did get one of them stuck in the valve stem while checking air pressure, but the stem was in the 6:00 position when I checked it. Other than that they have been great.

On the other hand being a worry wart the only concern I have is this, what if you have to plug a flat tire in the center of the tread? Will the beads stick to the plug throwing the balance off? :think1: That is the only downside I can see with the beads. Maybe I worry too much! :p

I bought a set of Dyna Beads to use when I went doubble darkside on my 1800 . I lined the dots on the tires with the valve stem. There was no vibration. So thier still in the box. I will probbly use them if I ever need to blance my CT on the rear.
