You dual use & off road guys... I have a question about this type of trailer.

Would something like this be useful, or even do-able on the trail???
I have hardly any off road riding experience, and wonder if this would be a hindrance. I like the idea of having a place to carry extra tools & fuel & parts. (never mind the price! this is only a thought experiment)

First off there's off pavement, then there's off road. For gravel roads, forest service roads and the like, I'd say yes. With a skid plate and a strong enough hitch, you could get it in some pretty rough stuff too, drag it over logs and rocks kinda stuff, any place you'd take a big GS or V-Strom anyway. IMO But really bad off-road, maybe not. You might also look at:

Yeah, that kind of confirms my suspicions on this kind of trailer. So, for most of the TAT you could pull one of these?
When I finally do get a 2nd bike for off-road riding, it will probably be for dirt service roads and such.

Hmmm...the Dakar looks like the right idea. I am scared of the thru axle mounting idea. A good solid hitch and 12" of ground clearance would make a pretty nice hauler...on or off the road.
Any idea why the tongue is so long? Is it needed for stability at high speeds?

The longer the tongue on any trailer the more stable it is at any speed. My thought is it would be great on a dual sport if you were two up and needed more space. When I took the KLR to Alaska, I packed so much stuff that I didn't use but thought it may come in handy that I couldn't park the bike on any chamber other than to the left. The suspension was compressed so much the side stand was too long for anything to the right. Always had to park it on the left side of the road to take pictures.
