I once told a friend that I have never slept in a sleeping bag. He looked at me disbelieving and stated, "how with all the camping you've done." I told him that I've spent many nights in a sleeping bag, but have never actually slept in one. I need my comforts. I've own a number of sleeping bag over the years in an attempt to find the perfect combination of warmth and "packability." My major complaints with sleeping bags have been that they are too constictive and too cold.

That was until I found the Goliath made by The North Face. Finally a bag that fits and is warm. This bag uses Polarguard 3D synthetic insulation. It is very light, compacts well, and lofts well. Although rated for 0 degrees, it does became cool for me when temperatures drop below freezing. My favorite feature is the 34" shoulder width. To my knowledge there are only a few mummy's with this much width. I wear about a 46 - 48 jacket and anyother mummy bag feels like a straight-jacket. I have had the bag for about five years. It still looks new in spite of being used regularly each season, not just by me, but by my daughters also. There are 6 other good sleeping bags to choose from and they've been told this is Dad's bag only. But they always seem to sneak of with it for anything from wilderness camping to sleep-overs. Although both are petite they say the like the extra room and the "fluffiness."

I really have no real complaints about the bag. It could be warmer, but that is really just me (if I'm not hot, I'm not sleeping). In spite of how well it has served me I will still be looking for a down replacement. I think down will be at least as warm, but should compact even smaller than its 11 X 21 stuff size.
