This a review of a new motorcycle only campground that is in the development stages.
For what its worth.....here's my $0.02
I attended their Preview Party over the weekend (10/18-19/08)in Dawson, TX. Their concept is to design and build a motorcycle only campground and retreat. They plan their grand opening next April. The preview party was cool with free beer, bbq, breakfast and bands but I intend to review the campground not the party. Keep in mind that it is currently under development. They arent making claims that it is a finished product....but they are well on their way.
The Good:
nice back roads to ride to get there from Dallas/Fort Worth
close proximity to Dallas/Fort Worth and Austin (only about 80 miles from my place)
several little towns, restaurants, shops and bars to stop in on the way
very heavily treed so you can camp under a canopy (good for summertime Texas camping)
plenty of flat spots that didnt require much clearing at all
they only have a handful of RV spots and plan to keep it that way
isolated location
i doubt it will ever get too busy so you should always be able to find a quiet spot to pitch a tent
plenty of good back roads surrounds this place so quality two-lane riding is everywhere you look
Navarro Mills Reservoir is less than 1 mile away (its a beautiful lake)
only 1.5 miles to fuel and c-store with a Subway
beer is only 6 miles away in Hubbard, TX
property managers were very friendly and helpful
tent camping rates seem like they will be reasonable (this preview weekend was free)
The Bad:
no grills...this may change as they get fuly operational.
no campfire rings were evident anywhere on the property. I spoke to the managers and they said, "we just never thought about it". How could anyone think about camping without a camp fire is beyond me. This may change in the future.
they plan on building 20 "Huts" that will be dispersed across the 40 acres it could spoil the beautiful landscape and I dont want to hear window unit air conditioners running when I'm camping...nor do I want to hear a generator.
The Misc:
the restroom and shower facilities were not finished but should be by their April opening. I'm sure they'll be first class but keeping them clean is the important part.
the on site pond will be nice in about 5-10 years once it fills up
The bottom line is it looks like they've got the right idea and a good start. I reminded the management that they shouldnt forget about the tent campers. It seems that they are designing everything around these huts because they will undoubtedly bring in more cash than a tent spot. I will try this place again. Met some cool people and there is a lot of potential there to have something pretty cool.
