View Full Version : Oklahoma Campout Nov. 7-9, 2008
Mr. Guy

If your looking for a place to go early November, give this a thought.
I was just wondering how many in the Ok. or near Ok. area would like to get together for a camp out. I was thinking Nov. 7-9, Fri, Sat, Sun, 2008 at the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. This is in the area that Road Runner magazine did an article in their Aug '08 issue. Not the most exciting roads for sport riders, but an interesting area none the less. Camp Doris in the refuge is a real nice campground that I have visited many times. We often see deer in the camp and sometimes buffalo. The entire refuge is free range. If this sounds interesting to you, post a reply and we'll see if this will fly.
Thanks, Guy

Guy.
I'm still a strong maybe - will depend on whether I get a new postion at work and if the new boss will let me have that Friday off... I should know by the end of the week...
Rest of my camping gear should show up Monday via the brown Santa... :D
Mr. Guy
10-05-2008, 09:59 AM
Brown Santa is headed my way too, with a new tank bag for my son, I wanted my old one back.
I was planning to head down there after the kids got out of school so I'll get there around 5:30 or 6:00 myself. A late arrival wouldn't be any big deal.

My wife, Susan, and I were our sons Cub Scout pack leaders and we always cooked for everyone on the pack campouts so I was thinking we would do the same thing here. We'll pick up the food and bring the cook gear, in the truck, and do the cooking Fri. night, breakfast lunch and dinner Sat. and breakfast on Sun. Nothing fancy but it will be filling I promise. We do ask for a donation to cover food cost, About $8-$10 per person for all weekend would be great, thats what we did for the scouts, you can save a lot of money when you buy in bulk. This is not a job for us, we don't want to make money at it or it would be a job, we just do this for friends everyonce in a while. This way you won't have to carry extra gear or food to the campground. Were more likely to sit around and B.S. if we're all around one campfire too. Hope this makes sense.

Guy,
Do you need $$ now, or when we arrive at the campground?
Mr. Guy
10-05-2008, 03:42 PM
At the campout would be great. Around Oct. 25th I'll ask for a final head count so I'll know how much food to bring and we'll go from there.

Hi All,
Is anyone interested in a short ride on Saturday? Just around the area or to points of interest. Two museums in the area I would recommend are the Fort Sill Historic Landmark:
http://sill-www.army.mil/Museum/Home%20Page.htm
This is on Fort Sill and you will need a safety vest to get on post.
And the Museum of the Great Plains:

Or just ride around and view the country side. Comments please.

I'm questionable at this point, just realized that's my mom's birthday and with my dad passing earlier this year I'd like to spend it with her. If I take a day or two off to do that I might ride and then stop by the campground but no promises.
sorry about that.

Less than two weeks away. If everyone who will be there will post up and let me know you will be there and if your solo or how many will be coming with you, I will know how much food to bring. If your a likely maybe, let me know that too. I'll be buying the food next wednesday, so if you change from a maybe to a yes please let me know. If at the last minute you decide you are going to make it, I always bring to much food, so don't worry about it, just let me know in time if you can. Here's a site for a forecast:

Maybe this was covered earlier and I missed it. I'm hoping to be able to make it but have to decide whether to bring the ST or the KLR. Are there any good dual sport rides around the area there, or should I take the 'comfort' route ;) and bring the ST?

I haven't riden any back roads around there, so it would be a "pick a road and see where it goes" sort of thing. I guess just pick your poison and be there. You shouldn't be disappointed either way.

They do stick in your mind for sure. I had limited income so had to chose a motorcycle that could haul my large size and I wanted to do miles.
I felt a gold wing was too old fuddy duddy at the time ( I have learned better since)
I needed a all around good bike for short and med touring , a little fun in the twisties and I could use as a daily back and forth to work .
I have rode 650s and vtwins but always loved the Honda V4s . It fits the bill of most things well and can go long distance( I rode to Utah) and twisties (hill country ) as someone said I hit those too fast. Its pretty good in traffic back and forth to work ( sadly I do that more than anything else in life) so I am pretty happy with it .
The only thing I might do different is buy one a year old to avoid the first hit but after that they seem to hold value pretty good also .
But dont get black as its sure is pretty when clean but a pain to keep it that way . Not so bad this year as it hasnt rained that much so more dust than wet road grime. If I can fandangle it I would have a ZX-14 also for those days I need to scare myself a little , a Dual purpose like the tiger for those back roads and a nice goldwing for long trips a few timea a year. A custon V-twin for show off nights around town.
The ST fills most of those needs pretty well and the others a little .
Chicks do dig the custom vtwins but the wife wouldnt like that anyway
Besides I look good on a black ST and it is just so smooth and works without a wimper. I follow the factory manual for maintance and it has been pretty much nonstop for me (only 19K miles) and I will most likely keep if for a few more years unless honda comes out with a color I like better . The new red is close and callingme but I am still happy with the bike I have

I packed the two motorcycles.
Then I packed one motorcycle and the SUV (so we can take the dogs).
Then I packed the SUV and put both bikes on the trailer.
To make a long story short, we are now taking the motor home. PERIOD.
Since we are taking a week over and a week back, I figured I would go in comfort.
If there is no room in the group camping for the behemoth, we can just walk over from an RV site with the chairs and dogs.
The whole point was to just meet some folks from the forum on this trip anyway.

I also think that waking up this morning to snow on the Sierras was helpful in convincing me that riding for two weeks might be sort of iffy this time of year.

There is a nice open area in the center of the loop and it's close to a new shower they keep open all winter.
Anyone bringing an RV or needing elec. for whatever could stay in loop E and be a short walk away. We will need to wait for the kids to get out of school, so may be there around 5:30 or 6:00.
Any questions just post up or PM.

Hi All,
I need to give ya'll a heads up, my mother-in-law went to get a heart scan last Fri. and her cardiologist found something he didn't like so she's going in this Friday for a heart catheterization and maybe get a stint installed. The plan for now is that we will be at the campout as planned, but it maybe that it's just me and the kids (no wife, the main cook, I just help), or not at all if, in the unlikely event something goes bad. I just wanted to let you know you might be on your own for the food after all. I really hope to be there, but I know ya'll will do fine with out me. Would kinda suck to not make it to my own campout. I have some of your cell #s, so if at the last minute I'll call someone and let you know what happened to me. But most of you will already be on the road before I will know for sure. I will at least try to be there on Sat. if nothing else. But the plan now is to go as planned.

Thanks to everyone for your well wishes, the Dr. acts like this is somewhat routine and should be done fairly early, so the plan is to be there Fri. as planned, maybe early Sat.
It'll take wild horses to keep me away, shes just my mother-in-law..............um.......to cold?
I'll call if something comes up.
Okay so far I've got on the yes list:
Black and Blue +1
Gulfxray
ImRubicon +1
Jetfixer
And on the probables:
V-Twin
Trailace
G-Man
Did I miss anyone, need to remove anyone, or rearrange my list. Still time to sign up.
I'll be food shopping tomorrow night and planning for 7 people + my family with my usual to much food buffer. I'll check the thread before I go to the store in case of changes.
Hope to see you there, Guy

I'm 2/3 packed.... Sure seems like a lot of stuff (and I'm not taking cooking stuff/food!), but I dont' think I have too much extra...
Oh well, 1st time out, so I expect to learn some things - what not to bring, what I should have brought, etc... :)

Hi Shawn,
I think the rule of thumb is lay out everything you think you need, then throw 1/2 back in the closet, put the other 1/2 on the bike.

When I started MC camping this time I found a bag that would lash to my MC pretty well and made it my camping bag. Everything I need for camping goes in that bag (actually the replacement:)). If it doesn't fit, I don't need it. Stuff changes, but not the rule: If it doesn't fit, I don't need it:)
BTW, the current bag is a WATERPROOF (yes I've checked it) from Wally World. I think the size is listed as 14x28" Plenty of room for enough to camp with.....2 waterproof bags in one box in the camping section under $30. Great deal.

Thanks BigTom....
I have everything, tent, sleeping bag, pad (big honking rei 3.5" pad!), clothes, pillow, teddy bear, etc. in a couple waterproof bags I got from Cabellas a few years ago. I have some things in a compression bag I got off of ebay, so that helps. I don't think I am taking a lot of excess, I think it is just this is the first time I have 'seen' it all in one place - if you know what I mean.
To be honest, when I have gone on one of my 'rides' in the past (hotel-ing it), I basically filled the same 2 bags up with 'stuff' - granted those were 6-7 days, but still...
Anyways, this is my 'break-in' event so there'll be some learnings I am sure! Main thing is it'll be fun! :D

Can't wait to see the Uni-Go... Thinking I am going to need one once I can figure out how to finance it!
I decided I am not taking too much, but what I am taking is bulky... :)
See everyone tomorrow... Hope to get there around 3:00-4:00PM...

Hi All,
No sweat Rick, we'll see ya down the road somewhere else.
Hay Jetfixer, better late than never.
Shawn, as long as you can keep the bike upright, carry what you want.
Hi Black and Blue, it's on weather I'm there or not, but I intend to be there.
Well, stuffs all packed, foods ready to go, and bikes are strapped to the trailer. As soon as the kids are out of school, we're on are way. Should be there about 5:30 or 6:00. Susan won't get there till Sat. morning. It's sausage and chicken gumbo for dinner tomorrow night.
Can hardly wait, Guy

well, my first post in a long time, but all well.
camp out was a lot of fun! Riding through the few turns and such around was fun. Riding to the top of Mt. Scott freaked me out a bit. Looking at the edge of the road, seeing just some foot tall rocks before an extreme drop off had me thinking thoughts of being impaled on a tree far below... :(
fun time all around though!
no pics from me, my dad has them...
