View Full Version : Possible get together?
Mr. Guy
08-10-2008, 12:55 PM
I was just wondering how many in the Ok. or near Ok. area would like to get together for a camp out. I was thinking Nov. 7-9, Fri, Sat, Sun, 2008 at the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. This is in the area that Road Runner magazine did an article in their Aug '08 issue. Not the most exciting roads for sport riders, but an interesting area none the less. Camp Doris in the refuge is a real nice campground that I have visited many times. We often see deer in the camp and sometimes buffalo. The entire refuge is free range. If this sounds interesting to you, post a reply and we'll see if this will fly.
Thanks, Guy

Don't know if it will fit my schedual, tenatively planningto be camping the weekend before that in Arkansas, at the CMA colors ralley. Might also depend on how much vacation time I have left by then! Never been to that part of Ok before.....

Even though I want to do this, I don't think I can. I'm probably going to be in Ohio at that time of the month. As we get closer to the actual date, I may find time to get to OK.

Ok,
I'll call this an Official Motocampers camp out. My wife and I used to be Cub Scout leaders for my sons Pack so we're used to cooking for big groups. So if it's ok with you guys we'll pick up the food and do the cooking for a modest donation and a little volunteer help. When we have a solid number in early Oct. I'll come up with a menu and post it here, if you have request or suggestions post them then. I look forward to meeting you all.
Thanks, Guy

This sounds like a hoot - I haven't camped there since the early 70s (and we had skunk visitors)....
I'm a maybe - I have some ducks to get in a row (as well as get some gear)....

Guy, put me in as a strong maybe, I'm not sure what work has in store for me but I should be able to make it. Do you think we can roll into camp Doris without reservations? I've never stayd there, but I drove thru there on my last trip back from OKC and it was real nice. Are you taking the DR? I bet there's alot of dirt to explore in the area.
Mr. Guy
08-17-2008, 01:19 PM
That time of year, the place is usually almost empty, I don't think it will be a problem. I was thinking about a ride in the area, but would keep it to pavement for the non dual-sporters that would be there. Maybe over to Duncan for the Chisolm Trail Heritage Center museum, and definitely to the top of Mount Scott for the view.
Guy
Guy if you have a repeat performance in the fall of 2016 I'm sure I'll be there (I retire that summer!) For now all I can do is wish I was going!
Thanks for the invite and I hope you all have fun!:)

Mr. Guy

Both my kids, Jeff 14 & Nikki 10, will be there if that's any encouragement. I was hoping for a family type campout. Maybe the wives and kids could come in the car if they're not riders. This way they could join in on the fun also. Or maybe getting away from the wives and kids is what your after. I guess we should look at this option as well.

Hi Joe,
Yea, I get the "family oriented" part, but I was wondering about the family showing up in the car if they are not riders. I didn't know how common that was. I was thinking that it might be a nice chance for the familys to see why the riders in their lives enjoy this sort of travel option.

Hi All,
I kinda hate to do this, but a conflict came up with the family. So I was wondering if it would be a problem if we moved this back one week to Oct. 31, Nov. 1-2, Fri., Sat. Sun. If not, it will work out I can come, but not the family. This would work better for me, plus it would better food for all if this would work. But I understand some may already have gotten time off from work and can't change it, if so we'll keep it where it is.
Thanks, Guy

Well you messed with my plans. Since you changed the date take me off the maybe list and put me on the definite list. We had several folks taking off the previous dates and I wasn't sure I'd be able to go, but now that you moved it I'm in for sure. Do you have a particular loop in CampDoris that you prefer? I'll probably show up Thrursday after work and grab a spot.

Hi ImRubicon,
I hadn't even thought about Halloween. My little girl would kill me too. So I guess let's think about 1 week later Nov. 7-9. Does anybody have a problem with this date. If not we'll change to this weekend. If so we'll keep it Oct.31- Nov.2. But this had better be the last change, so everyone can make plans.

Hey Guy
We are a maybe for this get together. I say maybe because we will head out that way...that's our target. We will be there unless something comes up or something happens on the way there. We are looking forward to this. I hope this doesn't mess up any plans you had. Let us know.
Mr. Guy
09-24-2008, 09:49 AM
That is the plan. Whoever can make it is great, just a get together to shake hands and swap lies(or at least road stories). My wife and I plan to do the cooking, so won't need to worry about that. If I get enough definite yes votes, I'll reserve a group camp. Other than that it's pretty much play it by ear. Hope to see you there.
Guy
P.S. For everyone, When it gets close to the end of Oct. make sure your vote up top reflects your plans. This is how I plan to buy food.

My wife, Susan, and I were our sons Cub Scout pack leaders and we always cooked for everyone on the pack campouts so I was thinking we would do the same thing here. We'll pick up the food and bring the cook gear, in the truck, and do the cooking Fri. night, breakfast lunch and dinner Sat. and breakfast on Sun. Nothing fancy but it will be filling I promise. We do ask for a donation to cover food cost, About $8-$10 per person for all weekend would be great, thats what we did for the scouts, you can save a lot of money when you buy in bulk. This is not a job for us, we don't want to make money at it or it would be a job, we just do this for friends everyonce in a while. This way you won't have to carry extra gear or food to the campground. Were more likely to sit around and B.S. if we're all around one campfire too. Hope this makes sense.

I, the wife half, just noticed that the hubby has us riding 1,600 miles ONE WAY and through 5 states to attend a weekend campout in a state that I had to look up on a map to find out where it was.
Also, I noted that it will be in NOVEMBER for this fair-weather rider-girl.
He had better be able to show me the ghost of Quanah Parker or Will Rogers to make this worthwhile (at least I assume that is some of the history of Oklahoma).
:p, The Wife
Mr. Guy
09-28-2008, 03:20 PM
As a matter of fact, the lake right next to the campground is Quanah Parker Lake and the ghost might rise out of the lake at midnight.:p The weather in November is pretty mild in Oklahoma, we always took the Cub pack down there in December. It shouldn't be to tough on you. After the campout, ride up to Claremore Ok. to the Will Rodgers Museum, I don't know about a ghost, but you'll see everything else about the man.

I might look up that Will Rogers museum, but I'm not going for any of that Parker propaganda stuff. Unless we visit the Adobe place where they got the snot beat out of them.
Sometimes I think I'm far too politically incorrect to take out in public. :o
