I think I have finally talked the wife into getting a new computer. I'm thinking maybe a laptop. Anyone care to share what you are using? I'm not looking for anything high powered that you would use for gaming or anything. Just something that I could use for digital photography and surfing the net. I have been told that AMD processors are less expensive and run a little faster than Intel but I really have no clue. The wife is kind of set against Dell, she had problems with the Dell PC's she had at work, and family members that have Dell laptops have had a few problems also. In all fairness, the laptops were bought online and were probably refurbs, truth be told. I have been looking at a couple of HP's for around $800.00, and would like to stay there or below if I can. I know, but the wife is cheap! :p

I'm open for all opinions and advise as my old 1997 Gateway is starting to make me cuss more and more. :D

Steve,
I have a Toshiba Satellite that has been trouble free for the past four years. Its running an Intel Centrino 1.73 mhz with two gigs of memory. Its has Windows XP pro loaded and runs very stable on a wireless network. I have been very happy with it. Hope this helps

I agree with Eric, I have a Toshiba Satellite too and it is even older, it had a couple of problems in the fist 3 months I had it but sent it back and they took care of it, not problems since.

Also this is my second toshiba Satellite since 1997, first one was still working ok but when it was about 5 years old I found someone that wanted it bad so they got and I got a new one :D

There certainly are a bunch of new ones out there and they are getting smaller and smaller. A couple of guys had lap tops in Dawson City that were smaller than a novel and they could plug the card from their camera in it and post pictures on the net very easily. One of them was eee something. Google eee laptop and it will come up.

Thanks for the link MidLife, I believe it's the same machines motomac was talking about.

Due to my lack of electronics skills I will probably buy one somewhere like Best Buy, etc. That way if I have a problem with it I can carry it back to them and say "fix it". I will probably have to pay a little more, but I can't deal with mailing something back and forth to get it fixed and E-mailing and calling automated customer service. That drives me crazy, and I want them to at least lie to me in person. :p

The last 3 laptops we have bought (1 for the oldest boy for school 3 years ago, 1 for the youngest boy for school, 1 for a neice for general purpose and gaming) have all been "older versions" that were outdated and <$500 at circuit city. We added 1 gig of ram to each for less than $100 (bringing all up to or near 2 gig) 2 are Toshiba 1 is a HP, and these have been great laptops all still running good. I think you can shop around and find deals like I have very easy, you might have to wait a few weeks. I am a tightwad!

I've been evaluating one of these at my job. It seems to be a rugged little box with decent battery life. It's certainly portable enough.

Thanks guys, of all the customer satisfaction reviews I have read most people seem to be well pleased with their HP and Toshiba products.
