This is a real nice place in Tellico Plains right near the west end of the Cherohala Skyway. The facilities are fantastic, the owners are wonderful and the cook in their restaurant is the best. The cabins are real nice and cozy too. Threre's a nice little creek along the back of the campground that is guaranteed to put you to sleep. There's a white water rafting place close by too if you're brave. The KLR650 folks have an annual event there. Group photo borrowed from the KLR650 forum.

Mark and Renee are great host of CMR! I've attended all of the TDTs (Tour de Tellico). We are getting together for TDT-IV on May 15-17.

Just a couple of pics of the area

Welcome Chuck! I wanted to ride Cherohala last year when we went to Deal's Gap but didn't have the time. I can't help but think it would have been a lot better ride than doing the Dragon. Maybe this spring!

Steve,
The Cherohola is a much better ride than the zoo at Deals Gap. The road is much more like the southern end of the Blue Ridge Parkway. It's wide clean roadway is a joy to ride, with mostly light traffic and much less police pressence than Deals Gap. Over the years and many motorcycle magazine articles DG has become a place to ride to, get a t-shirt, lunch and mabea a pic of yourself riding on the road. For me its become way too crowded, way too busy and a great place to get a ticket by one of many local law officers more than willing to part you with a chunk of your wallet.

I found Deals Gap over 20 years ago when it was the place to ride and see just what abilities you did or didnt have. Those days are long gone for me and my riding style back then. I have a photo from the old days when there was only 3-4 pieces of bodywork on the tree of shame...

Now you can't even see the tree. Back then an old man Pete and his wife Dorris owned the Crossroad of Time store and really liked to see motorcyclist's enjoying the area make them a nice sandwich and sell them some gas. Today it has become an oppertunity to make loads of money off of bike riders or anyone willing to buy a piece if the gap.. It's just not the same anymore for me anyway... Heres a photo of our first FJ1200 rally on a friday afternoon just ten years ago.

Next time your in that area save yourself the hassle of the gap and go enjoy the Cherohola, Im sure you will like it...

I agree. Most of us jaded old locals have found better twisty roads. I only ride the Gap when I'm with a group of out-of-towners. It's still worth a buzz through if it's your first time in the area and while it sure won't be the best riding of the trip, you probably won't regret it. Worst case scenario, you'll get behind an RV or a new biker who doesn't know how to lean, and you'll get to to look at the scenery on your way through.

On my last Gap ride of '07, when the speed limit was still 35, I got a ticket for going 42. Since then they've dropped the limit to 30.

I've noticed a bit more LEO presence on the Cherohala in the last couple of years. With it's growing popularity the traffic has been increasing lately and with that, a corresponding increase in stupidity.
