I've stayed in this campground several times starting in 2005 and the last time was on the way to CampSTOC in May of this year.

I can't say that this is a calm quiet campground anymore. Twice I have been on this mountain top when the tornado siren went off.
In 2006 we didn't even suffer rain or wind when the alarm went off. However, in May of this year we suffered about 3 hours of sustained strong winds and heavy rain from midnight to 3AM including an exciting announcement to seek shelter and then the siren went off. The morning after picture attached to this review reflects the May episode.

I will say that I have always enjoyed my campouts at this campground even when weather challenged.

There are full hookup campsites available, semi-primitive tent sites and the picnic area on the mountain's top has been converted to semi-primitive tent sites.

The best view is on the mountain top(CCC Road), the semi-primitive tent sites further around Bunker Loop road offer more weather protection. Mike and I were in the more protected area when we weathered the May storm. The other pictures are from 2006 when we stayed on the mountain top.

A hotel style lodge with a pretty good restaruant is available near the camp-store. The store is fairly well stocked but closes at 5:00PM most days.

Bath-house facilities are available but a pretty good walk from the mountain top sites and other semi-primitive tent area. The bath-house is located in the full hookup area.

Access is on well paved roads and probably some of the best twisties are on Hwy 281 and other entrance roads to the park.

I took an over-nighter to Cheaha this weekend to try out some new equipment, and well, really just to see the Fall colors......we are in a drought here in Bama so the colors were not so brilliant, but the weather was nice (no rain). I arrived at the campground around 2PM on Friday afraid the place would be packed.......I was wrong. The "Full hook-up" campground was pretty taken with rigs, but the Picnic Area on top (with the Primative Camping) was vacant. Tent camping (only) in this area is $16.50 per site, $2 per day Park Fee. The paved road of this area goes down the middle on the camping area with sites on each side. There are trees, but you do know you are on top of the highest point in Alabama with lots of rocks/stone formations. I kinda like my campground roads to be curvy and dark (covered with trees).......the Cheaha area reminded me of "Row Houses". Lots of rocks at each camping area, and the ground was hard (lack of rain)....I had a problem with tent stakes. Most spots come with a table......water and a potty are nearby, as well as a Pavillion and another covered picnic area. The store and Resturant/Motel facilities are approx 1/4 mile down the hill. Since we were in a drought, the park had a "no campfire" status.....bummer. The wind really picked up Friday night and was gusting enough to keep me awake alot of the night......can't imagine how cold it would be in November-January with all that wind. Place was quiet for the most part. There are some GREAT riding roads leading up to the park......and the Talladega National Forest surrounds Cheaha on one side. Next time I'll try The Forest since camping is cheaper ($8 per site) and fires were allowed. I cooked some soup for supper (on my 1-burner stove), but had the Breakfast Buffet on Saturday AM (opens at 7:30 AM CST).......very good food, $6.95 for the buffet, but coffee was an extra $1.95!!!! There is a lower campground, next to a lake, that was completely deserted....not sure if it was open or not.....looked like a summer campground with all the piers, slides, beach area, etc. I've added a bunch of pics from this trip. Barbers Motorsports Park is just down the road (20-30 miles??) and well worth a visit.....plus a Bass Pro Shop next door, and a new Outlet Mall within a mile of Barbers for the gals (a bargaining chip??).
