Chief and myself are planning on doing the middle part of the TAT late September and early October. He on his DR650 and I on my G650 X Challenge. We will depart Houston area on the 20th and plan to start the TAT at the Arkansas Mississippi border on the 21st. Then take 10 to 11 days to make it to the Colorado/ Utah border. Could be a little cold and some of the passes a little iffy in Colorado but it should be nice the rest of the time. We will be camping most if not all nights and hopefully some night out in the middle of nowhere.

If anyone wants to join us, feel free to let us know.

I won't have much vacation left by then but once you guys know the route, post it and maybe we can find a 'where the dirt meets the pavement' location to all camp at. Preferably in Arkansas or Colorado.

OK, what's a "TAT"?

A colorful and permanent ink drawing that you have implanted into your skin!!!!!

or it could be "Trans-America Trail", a dirt road route from Tennessee to the Pacific Ocean.

I've already started my 2 months of worrying about how to pack for this trip! Packing on a 650 without hard bags is a whole different ball game.

Hi Trailace,
I have not had a chance to try the TAT :(, but my good friend of about 20 years, Mark Sampson, has ridden the entire trail. He has his own website where he has some really good photos of the ride, along with lots of good details. He also has helmet cam video of some of the rides that can be purchased. His website is www.bigdogadventures.com Check out his website, you may find some info there that might help you out. Plus it jut makes for some good reading if you are into dualsport riding. Hope you find it helpful! :) Roger

The TAT is on my todo list in the near future. I don't think it will be this year though. I really would like to do the trail with a couple of experienced guys like the 2 of you, but I may hinder your progress, having never ridden dirt with ya'll, don't know how fast you go. I can do the dirt and gravel here in AK and Canada pretty well, but mud and single tracks are a little different than I have ridden in many years.

Roger Thanks for the link, I have read all Marks rides. Wish I had that kind of time to ride.

Mac,

I don't think this section will be that big a deal and sure you would be ok with us. I do my best to keep Chief for running away by getting in front and going slow. Anyhow your welcome to tag along if you want.

Just bought some new rear brake pads and I think I'm gonna get a pair of Hippo Hands or something like them to try and keep my hands warmer if we hit cold and wet.
Still need to decide on saddlebags, sleeping bag and clothes.
It would be easier to pack if there weren't those big old piles of rock to go over in Colorado!:D

Ship any cold weather gear that you need for CO to a town near the TAT. You can send it to General Delivery and mark the package to hold for your arrival. If you send it Priority Mail you can even arrange to have it forwarded to another Post Office if you need to.

This is how some thru-hikers get their food and gear along the trail. Some even use a bounce box. They keep all their town stuff in there and ship it ahead to their next planned stop in town and they have all their stuff that they need. This way, they don't have to carry all that extra weight.

I completed loading the maps for the section of the TAT we plan on doing and here it is. :D
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/320036397_aQSVw-L.jpg

Here is how it breaks down.:run1:
Home to start 575 miles
Start to End on the TAT 1816 miles
End to home 1173 miles
Total 3564 miles.

Now I will go back and look for campgrounds on or near the trail. I have a few already. :tent1:

I just thought of this, is this a "the more, the merrier" thing or did you have a max. number in mind. I know a few guys around the OKC area who would like to tag along also, but I don't want to exceed the crowd factor. If it gets to the split up in groups range, I'm sure I'll be in the slow group or just ride slack.

While sitting at the computer I'll try to do a little reseach about state parks in Ok.
Working East to West.

I haven't been to this one before but looks close to the TAT.

This one I've driven though small quiet clean.

Never been here.

http://www.touroklahoma.com/detail.asp?id=1%2B5U%2B3604
Nice and quiet, a few miles off the highway.

http://www.travelok.com/toDo/attractionsDetail.asp?id=1+5U+5439
Have driven by but not stopped. Last one for quite a ways.

http://www.touroklahoma.com/detail.asp?id=1%2B5U%2B3596
Nice park, quiet area, low population.

http://www.touroklahoma.com/detail.asp?id=1%2B5U%2B920
Small park, neat cave. Last park before panhandle and a deselate drive to NM.

http://www.touroklahoma.com/detail.asp?id=1%2B5U%2B3582
Never been there but should be close to TAT.

http://www.touroklahoma.com/detail.asp?id=1%2B5U%2B3584
Last state park in Ok. WAY out in the middle of nowhere.

By the way if you see Optima Lake on a map, it was drained years ago, there's nothing there, but for some reason it's still on a lot of maps.

Joe, all these are on paved roads and the ones in central Ok. would be a 6 to 7 hour ride from Dallas.

Hope this helps, Guy

OK, when I was a youngster on my first submarine (a Diesel boat) we got to shower once every 3 weeks on long operations whether we wanted to or not. So, now I enjoy a shower or 3 a day thank you very much. However there have been some camping experiences lately that a shower or 2 was missed. So, are you Texans trailering your bikes to TN? Are you planning to replace tires along the way? Are you cooking or buying meals? I will have my stove and perculator as a bare minimum.

Hi Mac,

My plan is minimal gear all around but I will bring my small stove and pot. The usual for me is instant something for breakfast in camp, snack all day, then heat something up in camp for dinner. New tires right before I leave should see me through the trip. What type tire will you go with, I ride the gravel roads around here with about 80% street tires. Do you guys think I should go more agressive than that or stick with what I'm used to. I'm thinking D606 or IRC GP-1.

Hi Rick,

I went ahead and took the whole week off, so I may meet you guys at the Mississippi border and go at least to the Colorado border. The mountain passes will be what gets me, I'm not that brave of a rider and I get scared looking the pictures of some of those narrow ledges on the computer!!! But gravel roads I can handle.

A slight change in plans and I updated my first post to match. We will still be leaving Houston on Sep 20 but plan on starting the TAT on Sep 21 Sunday. We should be able to get there in one day.

Guy I was planning on using the D606 or the D908RR but still not sure. I know I can get at least 3200 out of the 606 and maybe a little more if I do more dirt but have never used the 608.

Don't know which Big Agnes you have, but mine was good the whole trip. If I had camped last night it would have been way too warm. I have the -20 Elk Park. I did sleep with it unzipped a couple of nights, but the rest of the trip it was verrrry cozy. It is hard to get out of it when a bear is trying to get in the tent though!!!

Hey Mac, I just have the 40 degree one right now. I am thinking about buying the Summit Park down bag for cold weather but Beeper seems to think that since I am almost the size of a bear, I should be fine with the 40 degree bag down to about 25!!
How did your bag pack? That is the main reason I'm thinking about the down bag is for packing size and weight.

I have a back up site but it only has 5 sites that are planed to be completed in the fall of 2008. So I’m not to sure if it will be ready and I only have a general area of its location but it better than no back up. The name is Delta Heritage SP and it located at N34 33.009 W90 46.086 :D

Hi Mac,
Maybe we could meet in Eureka a head the rest of the way over. It's pretty much on the way for me.

Hi Rick,

I'm still not sure about my tire choice, a lot of people say the D606 doesn't last on the highway but I'm betting they ride them to fast so as slow as I go I might get more miles out of them. What do you think. It's either that or bring a spare rear, trying to find a 17" knobby is kinda tough.

I will run the D606 or the D908RR but not sure. I had 2,000 of pavement and 500 of dirt on my last 606 and they still had over a 1/4-inch of knob left. (500 to 1000 miles) It would not be that good off road but would be ok to ride home. Hope we don't do too much pavement on the route.

Mr. Guy

I ordered a set of 606's today. I have a bit of pavement to get to Eureka Springs and back to AR/MS to meet you guys. I got 12,877 on the front Tourance and it still has tread on it, but the rears went in 6,000. And I didn't really ride hard, but I was loaded heavy. I will have a set of soft bags this trip and not be nearly as heavy.

Guy, if you want to meet in Eureka and ride to MS line with me, great. Or we can wait for them to get to the Eureka area.

OK guys after looking at the maps and not set in concrete stopping for the day plans it looks like we could complete this by Sep 28th. It does depends on what kind of time we make but if we cover the same amount of miles that the maps call for then we would be at the UT border on the 28th of September. I know if all goes well we will have a few days left so that is why I added the CD tracks. I also just might add some of Utah but if I do that I know I will need a tire. Chief and Mac what do you think more of the TAT or some of the Continental Divide? I myself would say CD but I don’t care.

This will work, its 96 miles from the end of the TAT to the beginning of the 106 mile White Rim trail. We will need to plan on doing the rim trail in a day because the camp sites fill up fast and there is a 1 year waiting list. So I read but if you want to call feel free. I still think we could camp in Arches NP and ride the trail with light bikes. What you think?

Sounds great!!!! 1 day should be good on the WRT. Only problem is, I'll be stopping every 100 yards to take pictures!
I saw a trip report on ADV that had a couple of nice private campgrounds in the area also.

There's a place there called Arrowhead Motorsports that caters to Dual-sporters if we need to arrange for a tire. Also a big Suzuki-Kawasaki dealer in Durango, Co. I'm gonna stop in there next week and see if they keep a good stock of Dual-sport tires. I think Mac's KLR uses a 17 rear like mine so they should have some.

Hi Mac, I could make it to the MS line on Sat., but I'm sure I would be feeling it though. So hang out in Eureka and wait for them to catch up wouldn't be bad except I hear Ark. east of there is real nice on the trail. There's time to make up minds here.

Hi Chief,
I've been thinking about the MT21 also, but haven't heard anyone say how many miles they get out of them. How many do you get. I like the Scorpion A/T and run them on gravel all the time but I'm not sure about the rougher parts of the trail.

Hi Rick,
I'm flexible as far as plans go, my limiting factor will probable be how long I can go with out my CPAP. I may have to head home early if I can't take the fatigue from getting to little sleep anyway. I would bring it but I'm afraid it wouldn't make it on the rough roads let alone a few drops of the bike.

Thanks All, Guy

I spent 2 nights in Silverton, Co where we will attempt to go through or very close to. I asked several locals what the weather was like at the end of September and I got reports of 0 or very cold from several people! They seem to think we are gonna freeze!
We should probably plan to try and make it through that stretch during the middle of the day and try to get west of there for the night.

After being in Colorado I am changing my riding gear plan to include more cold weather gear!

Hi Chief,
A page back you said you were going to start prepping your DR. What kind of work are you going to do. I've been riding mine with the suspension lowered, so last weekend I raised it back up. And I will turn my rear sprocket around when I mount my new tires. Other than that, I don't think I have much to do. I will be bringing a 14 tooth front sprocket and put it on when I get to the Mississippi. I like it better for back road work, but not so much for the highways.

Guy

Chief
07-19-2008, 10:32 AM
I'm gonna change the fork springs for heavier ones. I changed the back one before Rick and I went to Mexico so I'm gonna change the front to match. I also have a 14t countershaft sprocket that I may put on or bring with me. I have a spare shift lever, clutch lever and clutch cable that I'll bring. I'll also have a tow strap in case any BMW's break down!
The only other thing besides oil and filter changes is I'm working on ergonomic things to fit my big body, like handlebars and footpeg locations.

Does anyone plan to bring extra gas cans. I'm running an IMS 5 gal. tank which gives me about 200 mile range +-. I could build some carriers to go where the pass. foot pegs go to hold a 2 gal. can on each side if anyone thought I'd need them. That should be it.

Also put some big, almost ape hanger handlebars on to try and make it more comfy to stand on. The wires and cables were almost too short so I spent a bunch of time re-routeing things to make it work, but got it all done.
I put a switch on the headlight so I can turn it off if I want to run my Gerbings jacket.:)

Now I'm waiting on my Dirt Bagz and Hippo Hands to come in and I'll be ready to go!

So I got my new levers and clutch cable today and I was thinking about routeing the cable before I leave home and zip tying the ends out of the way, so if it breaks all I have to do is switch the ends. Do any of you do this? To me it sounds like it would speed up a fix on the trail if I didn't need to remove the tank and stuff to change the cable. I'm starting to think I have to many questions, but this will be my first long off-road trip.

Ok,

So I got my new levers and clutch cable today and I was thinking about routeing the cable before I leave home and zip tying the ends out of the way, so if it breaks all I have to do is switch the ends. Do any of you do this? To me it sounds like it would speed up a fix on the trail if I didn't need to remove the tank and stuff to change the cable. I'm starting to think I have to many questions, but this will be my first long off-road trip.

Thanks, Guy

Guy, I was thinking of doing this very thing, or installing the new one and route the old one as a back up for my trip to AK.

Ya Ya, I know, " Not another question from Guy ", But here's my latest. Were's the fine line between packing for comfort, and packing light enough for the trail. I know this is a matter of personal preference, but how much is enough and how much is to much. I'm stuck between whether or not to take my tent, thick sleep mat, and chair or no tent, thinner mat, and no chair. Also between my thick sleeping bag, which will be to hot most of the trip, and thinner bag, which may be to cold in Colorado, but I can add a liner to it. I'm only talking about 10 or 12 lbs. so does it even matter? some of the weight will be up high, will that affect handling to much? Or am I just worrying about to many small details? I never worried about this stuff before, but those were all mostly highway trips with a little gravel thrown in, this is a new ball game to me.

So go with comfort, or go with easier trail riding?

Guy,
I'm trying to pack as light as I can and still be comfortable. I think most of this ride will be easy unless it rains a lot then we will be dealing with lots of mud. If that is the case than you do not want an overloaded bike.

Hey you going to do the whole ride now? :D

Hi Rick,

Yea, I'm leaning more to the light side. I've got time off 9-20 to 9-28, so I will try to go as far as I can. But like I've said, my limiting factors will be fatigue from to little sleep ( sleep apnea ) or to tough a trail, I'm not in this to risk getting hurt. With you guys help, though I will go as far as I feel safe. Or as time allows.

Again, thanks for letting me tag along, Guy

P.S. Details: I was thinking, if it's ok with Mac, of being packed up on Thurs, then leaving work around noonish on Fri. and meeting Mac in Eureka Springs Fri night, then an easy ride to West Helena on Sat. to meet Rick and Chief. Mac if thats ok with you I'll PM cell # for if any last minute changes.

Guy, last year I had 71,885 miles. This year I will only be in the 50K range.
I love to travel, I love to camp, and I love to ride. Since I don't have to do Honeydo's for someone else, I pretty much march to my own drum. My kids are grown and married and are fairly self sufficient. My neighbor watches the house, picks up my mail, and mows my yard while I'm away. And a lot of folks feel the same as you about me. OK??? Now why did you end up with that combo?

There are a few reasons I pick this combo. First off the D606 is a great tire but it is actually one size smaller then what came on the GX. By smaller I mean skinner and although they are skinner it is also a taller tire. 130/90/18 (W/H/D). The GX is a tall so the shorter 140/80/18 might help me reach the ground better. The RR908 is wider so it will do a little better in sand and gravel. The down side is the tread patter will not be as good in the mud. It also has a thick carcass so you can run the air pressure down to 12 or 14 lbs without an issue. The last thing is this is a heavy tire for heavy bikes like the KTM 950 ADV so on 650 there are reports of guys getting up to 5,000 miles of wear.

I pick the MT21 because it also has a thick carcass and can handle low psi. Not sure how long it will last but time will tell.

Yea, Why? Oh, and pics.

After I install them I will take a few pic’s.

I need to stop reading those TAT ride reports. The closer we get the more they're starting to freak me out. First time jitters I'm sure, but I'm starting to pay attention to the hardships they talk about. A year ago I read those and thought I can't wait to do something like that, now I read them and go "Oh crap I'm going to have to ride though that". When I start to feel it's getting to tough, I'll just have to shake your hands and wish you well on the rest of your trip. Ark. and Ok. I should do fine in, it's Colo. and the Rockies I'm not sure about. I'll just go as far as I can, but I'm not in this to take chances. There's plenty of scenic paved roads for me to head home on.

Bummer, if it is the operation system you may be able to just reinstall over the top of what is there.

If the drive is failing you can put in a new drive, load the OS and then get a external drive and put the old drive in it and hook it up. it may run long enough to get some of your data off of it.

Guy, I haven't met you or seen you ride, but from reading your posts I think you will do fine. Sure, you need to be careful but don't let yourself get caught up in those ride reports. I used to be the same way reading up on ATV rides. My biggest fear was bringing home a bent up ATV and facing the wife who needs it to do yard work! I would read about falling thousands of feet off of a mountain and almost certain death, and when I got to the place I was reading about I would think, "Are you kidding me?". I would hear about this terrible creek crossing and when I got there I would think I had to be in the wrong place. I think that a lot of ride reports are slightly "embellished", and I have even seen photos of people climbing hills that look like monsters. Then when you look at the pictures close you can see where the cameras were tilted for maximum effect. :p

Do like I do, know your limits, use your best judgment, and enjoy the adventure. Like you said, you can always turn around and find another way around. I have been on trips, where I worried the whole way and it was more like a job than a vacation. Just take it one day at a time and have a blast. Oh yea, and think about us poor guys setting here wishing we were riding with you guys from time to time. You will do fine.

Guys, there is too much history for the reason of missing the TAT, but you ever run into Mellow, he can tell the story. Chief and Trailace may know some of it. I will do the Trail at some point, it may be alone, but I will do it. I really was looking forward to doing with you guys though, rubber down.

Went out riding on the DR this afternoon, just messing around, trying the new jacket and helmet and seeing how I liked the little windshield I put on. Everything was good!

Coming to the house I rode down through the ditch in the front yard and was gonna ride some circles around the yard just to play. I downshifted from second to first while I was standing on the pegs, or so I thought! I had only downshifted to neutral and soon lost all momentum on the damp grass and down I went!:o
I stood there for a second laughing at myself and then decided it was just good practice for picking the bike up.:D

Mike, next time, try unhooking the camper trailer.

Ok guys (not just Guy) here is a thread that will you at ease about the TAT. I think it is one of the best so far. It starts a little slow but has lot of good info. TAT (http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=344776)

Okay Rick,

I finally succumbed to temptation and started reading this report, only 3 pages into it, but this is more my style. Nice and relaxed. Take it easy and enjoy. I like it.

I got a free day off today because of the storm so after evacuating the BMW and the Harley I decided to finally install my fork springs on the DR. I went out riding around in the yard and the springs seem to make a big difference in handling. I'm happy.

Hey Guy, how long does it take those red dirt Oklahoma roads to dry out after all the rain ya'll are gonna get this weekend?

When I came through Arkansas last weekend there was quite a bit of creek backups that I could see from the interstate thanks to Gustav.

9 days, I'm really gonna be ready if we have to do without electricity all week!

Hi,

Rick, thanks for the file, I'll add to my GPS.

Chief, a couple of days should be all it takes. We got some of that Gustav up here too.

If you and Rick need to evacuate, head up this way, I've got plenty of tent space, or you can sleep in the shop if you want.

Mac, I'd like to have you along too, but like I said before, if my wife would ride, I'd drop all of you in a heart beat and go to Eureka too. Don't sweat it. We'll see ya somewhere down the road.

Hi Rick,
My Garmin Mapsource program won't let me open your GPX file. It uses a MPS file type.
Do you know how I could fix this.
Thanks, Guy

Ok, fixed now. Just in case anyone else runs into this, I went to Garmens website and downloaded the newest version of mapsource and it worked fine. I was running ver. 3.02, the new one is ver. 6.14. I guess I was a little behind the times.

I have not even been able to get back to my house since the hurricane! As of last night it was still under water. We finally left Houston last night and came to San Antonio and got a hotel. Gonna go back tommorrow and see if we can get in to see the damage.
The bikes are OK and I evacuated all my riding gear except my saddlebags so I'm still good to go unless something happens when we get in to see the damage.

Gonna try and take some time from pulling sheetrock and sorting muddy stuff to tend to getting the DR ready tommorrow. Have to locate my riding stuff and my sleeping bag and get it all packed. I think my portable tire pump got flooded so I'll have to rely on you guys for air if I have a flat!

Glad to see you're going to still try and make the trip... that's gotta suck to go through all that.. is there such a thing as hurricane insurance or does the flood insurance cover it, if they allow such a thing in your location?

Well Guy, I just talked to Rick and decided that I can't leave until Monday because of my hurricane situation. Everything that we salvaged from the storm is still sitting in the middle of the yard and I have to find a place to put it before I can leave.
I am gonna get all that done in the next 3 days and then I will meet ya'll on the trail on Monday night. Then I'll spend 2 weeks having a blast riding dirt bikes before I gotta go back and figure out where I'm gonna live!

Ya'll have fun starting without me and don't tear up anything before I get there.

I haven't been this exited about a trip since my first trip without my parents along. A friend and I rode about 100 miles on our 125s to a state park, I think Roman Nose State Park, for an overnight trip. I was in Piedmont Junior High at the time. Good times, good times.:)
