Please create a Mississippi area for Campground Reviews. I will post my comments here and please move it when you get a minute....or let me know if I need to do it. By the way, thanks for the site. While I dont post much I find it a valuable resource and I've recommended it to others on other boards.
Ratliff Ferry Campground
Canton, MS
Located at milepost 123 on the Natchez Trace.
The campground is located on the Ross Barnett Reservoir about 20 miles north of Jackson, MS.
This area also serves as a public boat ramp so it can be busy on popular weekends. The tent camping area is flat, under the canopy of pines and right by the water. The problem was that each site was not well defined and it would have have been interesting if it were more crowded. However, it was Memorial Day weekend and the tent area was not crowded at all so its probably not really an issue. Now that I think about it, this proved beneficial because the three of us were able to set up camp in our own area irrespective of a defined campsite.
The Good:
Cheap.....$5 per night per person.
Can park the motorcycle beside the tent.
Fallen firewood is plentiful...One of the workers even helped me load it onto a cart and take it back to my site.
Very close to the Trace. (.25 miles?)
Tent site is right on the water....great for fishin'.....dont mistake this as me saying the fishin is great.
Management was not picky about anything.
Plenty of trash cans in the tent area.
There is a convenience store and a restaurant on site.
Cheap beer at the restaurant....$1 draft beers.
Convenience store was useful for snacks, ice, drinks, etc.
The Bad:
Only one picnic table in the tent camping area.
Only one grill in the tent area. Not a big deal for me because I dont cook in camp.
The convenience store didnt have an air hose for airing up tires.
Can be a little noisy. The fishermen gt up and on the lake early. It wasnt a problem for me but I'm an early riser.
Tent area is right beside the parking area for the public boat ramp.
The shower, while warm was not clean.
The restrooms by the boat docks were nasty. (The ones in the bar were cleaner...as in not nasty)
The convenience store had odd hours. They closed at 7 on one of the busiest weekends of the year.
The Ugly:
I refused to eat anything from the restaurant because I witnessed the cook's personal hygiene habits and decided I would not eat anything he touched.(Maybe I should start cooking in camp) To be fair this was the opening weekend for the restaurant/bar. The problem was the cook was the owner. He also had what appeared to be a professional cook start the following day. Bottom line is the owner has a lot to learn about restaurant/bar operations.
