Well,

Now we are coming out of a Mountain Hardware Thruhiker (it's a "2 person" backpacking tent) which is perfect for 1 person and gear.

Here is how we came to our decision.

Jules hobby background is running, backpacking and hiking.
Mine has been motorbikes, MTB riding, camping and hiking.
So this set out the criteria for what we were looking for in a tent. That I could be able to pack it and carry it if we use it backpacking instead of 2 smaller tents.

A good freestanding 3 season tent, with room for us and our gear (helmets, jacket, pants and tank bag) then a decent vestibule (for boots and Jesse's if the need to take them off). Also, decent head room (not necessarily to stand up, but head room), ease in setting up and packability. Also, the need of a bathtub type floor (spent too manynights in the rain). I wanted something that can pack decent on the bike. Price point was to try to stay under 300 bucks. So that meant that there are a lot of good tents out there.

Now that website (backcountry outlet) does sell the same BA tent in a 2 person in which the Queen mattress will fit, but that is all; plus this 3 person was only 30 bicks more.

I had narrowed it down 3 tents plus a "fourth if dire need".

1) The MSR Mutha Hubba - a 2007 model
2) The Sierra Designs Antares tent - also a 2007 model
3) The Big Agnes Muddy Slide 3 - a 2007 model

and a "maybe" tent

Cabela's Delux XPG 4 Person tent.

So why look at last years tents?

Why not...
I'm all about saving money (that way I can buy more PBR!!!) Hell, my riding gear is all the BMW Savannah II gear (that I love).

On to the tents:

MSR Mutha Hubba: (the most expensive)

Pros: Great tent, highly recommended by a lot of people on here.
Cons: 5 poles to hassle with while assembling (not a biggie tho), no bathtub floor.

Sierra Designs Antares:

Pros: Another well built tent. Good reviews (plus ground cloth included).
Cons: Not really any except i has 3 poles. 2 main ones and a "brow" pole.

Big Agnes Muddy Slide 3:

Pros: Good built tent. Could find only 1 review of THIS tent. A lot of people on here talk good about the BA tents.
Cons: Really couldn't find anyone who used this tent on here, which is odd.

Cabela's Delux XPG 4 Person tent:

Come in at a whopping 10 lbs packed and packs at 9" x 20". They don't make this tent is a 3 person, just 2 or 4. Plus you have to get the ground cloth seperate. So, I am looking at 220 for the tent and then another 20 bucks for the ground cloth.
Advantage: They have a Cabela's not 5 miles from my house.

So here are real pics:

Everything packed so nice and neat ( packed size was right at 23inches).

Now there wasn't any instructions on this thing, but it's not too hard to set up.
Let's set it up in the garage, shall we? BTW, the back yard is way to muddy to do this right now.

Footprint - Included with the tent!

74" wide

85" long

It only has 2 poles - made out of some good quality aluminum.

It also comes with 10 of the BA stakes - 7075 - T6 Aluminum

So enough of the jabbering and let's set it up...

Throw the tent down:

Insert the 2 poles that criss croos (they are the same length) so nothing to get wrong:

Hook the poles into the lops and set it up and you are done, in under 5 minutes.

So dimensions when it's assembled.

87" long

Say 78" wide

How about inside:

Nice tub floor....

It also comes with a cool little gear loft.

So since we got the tent set up, let's put up the rainfly.

It's a lovely shade of lime green..

Easy enough, throw it over and secure the 4 corners.

http://voodeauxphotography.smugmug.com/photos/252313611_zfpmW-L.jpg

It has dual vestibules which I think is pretty cool.

http://voodeauxphotography.smugmug.com/photos/252313749_dhWE6-L.jpg

That rule is showing 36 inches.

http://voodeauxphotography.smugmug.com/photos/252313901_AgyQ9-L.jpg
The other cool thing is that it has vents that you can open even in the rain on all 4 sides.

Side vent:

This side has a vent and a window.

Door vent:

Now here is a cool thing about the 2 vestibule doors. They open opposite of each other.
http://voodeauxphotography.smugmug.com/photos/252316324_RhU48-L.jpg

So here it another cool thing. It is rumored that one can put up the rain fly and ground tarp without the tent in bad weather (so you can try to keep your tent dry), or take it down.

Here is what you can do say let's take it down like that.

Unhook the tent clips
http://voodeauxphotography.smugmug.com/photos/252314048_9r8Z7-L.jpg

Make sure that the velcro is attached for the rain fly.

http://voodeauxphotography.smugmug.com/photos/252314197_wapMk-L.jpg

Make sure the top "cris cross" has the velcro in place.

http://voodeauxphotography.smugmug.com/photos/252314759_uDNEu-L.jpg

And take your tent out and now you have a shelter.

http://voodeauxphotography.smugmug.com/photos/252316324_RhU48-L.jpg

Now let's re-pack it in the stuff sack.
http://voodeauxphotography.smugmug.com/photos/252316871_CpBqY-L.jpg

The poles are a little to long for the top of the Jesse unless you do this:

How about the stuff sack?

http://voodeauxphotography.smugmug.com/photos/252317509_Exjqp-L.jpg

Hmmmm.

Let's try the Cee Bailey Jesse soft bags:

Everything fits but the poles.
http://voodeauxphotography.smugmug.com/photos/252318239_Wi32G-L.jpg

But a little too big tho~

http://voodeauxphotography.smugmug.com/photos/252318605_pcxaH-L.jpg

No problem, it will go in a dry bag with my sleeping bag..

Stay tuned for the final installment.

Now before it gets out of hand, I do own several sleeping pads; but here lately been using the inflatiable mattresses. My body at 38 just isn't the same at 18 or 28! And either mattress still packs as small as any of my sleeping pads I own.

I use the "twin" mattress and it fits perfect in my Mountain Hardware 2 person tent, so we can see what it looks like in this one.

http://voodeauxphotography.smugmug.com/photos/252311715_TGLNL-L.jpg

With this set up I still have a good 30" - 35" of floor space.
http://voodeauxphotography.smugmug.com/photos/252311893_fJd7t-L.jpg

And now for the "new" set up for me and Jules.

Exhibit "B"...

http://voodeauxphotography.smugmug.com/photos/252312705_XuXyi-L.jpg

We've got around a foot of open floor space to put our gear...

http://voodeauxphotography.smugmug.com/photos/252312867_MHz87-L.jpg

So here is a cheesy pic of a happy Jules!
BTW, that is the "offishul" limited edition Team Double Barrel Racing shirt I have on
http://voodeauxphotography.smugmug.com/photos/252313316_P8p7g-L.jpg

As far as leg room, I'm 6'3 and still got some room left over.

I hope this little write up helps some of you decide on a 3 person tent for you and your significant other (2 person + gear tent)....

Wow, got to be the best tent review w/pics I've seen in a while.. thanks.. I really wish more tents would allow you to pack the tent and keep the fly up so you can stay dryer.

Agreed, the ability to take down the tent while leaving the fly & ground cloth in place is interesting. Great review.
