I have the bike and camping stuff packed on the bike and am ready to roll out in the AM. Should be a fun and exciting first camping experience to Moonshine, IL. There are calling for a low of 32 degrees tomorrow night with a chance of snow. If I can handle this, I can handle pretty much anygthing mother nature throws at me in the future camping trips.

Last time I camped in weather that cold I took one of those small ceramic electric heaters and stayed at a campsite with electricity. It took the bite of the cold but it was still pretty cold.
Let us know how the trip to Moonshine went. If it lives up to it's name, I want to go there too!

It's amazing how much warmth you get from inside that sleeping bag, I'm sure you'll be fine... Now, just don't go hiking on the top of a snow covered mountain.

Dang, I should have taken a picture of him in that recliner in the farm house before I left this morning!!! The only one who spent the night in a tent was his buddy Brad. LOL!!!

True. I see how you are though, don't give a guy any credit. I did spend about 4 hours in the tent. But when nature called and I went to the house to use the pot, I could not pass up that recliner. Brad did make it the whole night out in the tent.

So Mac, I think that does give me 4 more hours in the :tent1: than you for the weekend;)

Hopefully Campstoc will be alittle warmer as there was snow, sleet, and rain last night. I am not giving up on this!

Sounds like you all had a good time, that's the important thing. We have about a 50% chance of snow here tonight.

LOL Mac was using ancient camping technique.... never pass up the chance to sleep in a farm house! It's closer to the potty.

4 hours in a tent! Your an old hack at this now! Nothing to it.;)

CampSTOC should be way warmer than Moonshine. It's a month later and in SW Virginia..... hmmmmm but Willville is in a little hollow.... and it could rain..... Nah! It'll be fine! ;)

Ok...here is the one and only picture that was taken of the tents. We set up on a nice little spot east of a garage that blocked the wind from our :tent1:. I am the guy in the John Deere Hoodie.

My biggest problem seemed to be that when at home in my bed I normally sleep with one arm under my head with hand above the head. It was so cold I could not sleep that way because my hand would have froze. So I could not get comfortable with both arms in the sleeping bag and one arm basically under my body. Woke up a couple times with both arms tingling and asleep. Any tips?

Well, while I don't normally regard a picture of two tents with a house as a background as camping... you guys did well considering the elements.

4 hrs in that stuff.. yeah, you're initiated... the rest should be easy now... Wish I could have been there, there would have been 3 tents...

Where a hoodie jacket to cover your head (keeps the heat from escaping off your noggin) and wear gloves?? That's all I can think of.

And be sure the clothes you sleep in are not the same ones you've been wearing all day. Change into dry clothes set aside for sleeping in only, (this includes the hoodie you will sleep in). Body vapor is your enemy, and our bodies give off lots during the course of a day.

Body vapor

Now, there's a term I understand yet have never heard in my life... LOL

Its a garage, but was pretty much the only place we found that was dry and we could set the tents up without them blowing 3 counties away. So we took what we had. Really am ready to give it another shot and stay in the tent the whole night.

Trekker,

I did change all cloths and wear the hoodie and a stocking hat. Did not even occur to me to try the gloves, but that would have done the trick. And I had a least two pairs with me on the bike.

I'll be sure to sit next to you around the campfire at CampSTOC....

Wait.... I will be using my sling chair and that puts my breathing intake too low! Nevermind!

Hmmmmm not where I grew up, if you wanted you could have put a tent right next to the potty :D:oh2:

Hi STindy05,
You might try wrapping your arm in your riding jacket to keep it warm. That way it can stay outside of the sleeping bag.

OK, I am back from Moonshine and my Submarine Crew reunion in Charleston and I did camp 3 nights after Moon shine. It was in the mid 30's and no farm house. There were a row of pine trees behind my tent that made it a lot closer to the head. I'll post a picture of the camp tomorrow, I'm tarred.

As promised, here's a couple of pics from my camp at Mt Pleasant SC KOA. They had an old railroad caboose they used for a cabin. I didn't get inside it, but it was air conditioned and pretty neat.

Motmac, What is the brand of your tent and can you stand-up in the center?

It's a Eureka Tetragon 8 and I can stand stooped over. The height is 5'. The biggest drawback to it are the poles. They are 29".
