I ride an 1800 Goldwing. It is not a sport bike, but ridden properly, it is no slouch in the twisties either.

This trip can be leisurely or twist the throttle till you scare yourself. Your choice.

Camping places are plentiful on this route.

Starting on I-70 at exit 175 near New Florence, head south on Hwy. 19. A few short miles bring you to the Missouri River bridge and Hermann. This quaint old German town is famous for wine. Good food, drink, and if you want, several B&B for a great night sleep.

Whenever you are ready, head on south on 19 while enjoying the good blacktop roads to Salem. You are about to enter the Ozark National Scenic Riverways area. A few miles south are several places to take wonderful float trips if that is your thing. Lots of rustic camping in this area.

Continue on to Eminence. Here I suggest a turn to the west on Hwy. 106 for about 5 miles to see Alley Springs and Mill. Take a short walk around the spring to cool down in the warm summer weather.

Backtrack now east on 106 and turn north on Hwy 21 near Ellington. Stay on 21 as it joins 49 towards Ironton. You are now near several side trips if you so choose. Near here is Taum Sauk Mountain, the highest point in Missouri at 1772 ft. You can also enjoy a swim in the river at Johnson Shut Ins State Park or tour a Civil War site at Pilot Knob.

Head on north on 21 and be sure to stop at Elephant Rocks State Park. This unique geological area features huge granite boulders. A well-paved walking path takes you through the park.

An easy ride north on 21 will have you joining up with Hwy 47. Take 47 north to Warrenton at exit 193.

You are only 18 miles from the start but have spent a wonderful day or two and about 325 miles getting there.

Enjoy!

Hi Bipeflier,

Most of my trips in Missouri have been in the SW. Next time I think I will go farther east. If the scenery and roads are close to as good as the SW I won't be disappointed.

Thanks for the report, Guy

I used to go to the Popular Bluff area quite often when I lived in Blytheville Ar. We liked to float the river. I rode a bicycle all the way across Missouri and back in a single day once. Went from Haiti on the Miss. River to the western border town of Kennet. OK, it was across the boot heel, but we did go from the east to the west border and back in a day!

There's some seriously good riding in Missouri, particularly in the southern half of the state.

For those who haven't experienced it, I suggest exploring the alphabet roads, county roads designated by single and double letters. Lots of fun and interesting sites, towns, people, etc...

Key word EXPLORE. You won't be disappointed. And yes, there is camping, as quite a lot of the area is actually N.F.
