Well I lied! I've been camping for years and while alot of the people I know have stopped and become mom and pop travelers, I am still at it at 53! I just can't get the outdoors out of my blood! You just have to adjust your bike/gear to include the most bang for your buck and go for it! There's nothing like hearing the heavy foot of a bear walking thru your campsite and the scurrying of a lone wolf frightened by your metal machine! Then there's the thumping sound a coon makes when it hits the ground (falling out of a tree..) after you turn on the tunes at 4:30 in the morning.
This site is great! I can tell I will become a regular on here!
Check out where I've been. Go to my homepage on webshots at http://community.webshots.com/user/giggs108

I got an Olympus Stylus 1030 digital. This camera is supposed to withstand shock, very cold temps which I occasionally shoot in when I kayak in winter...,water depth to about 30 feet (I kinda doubt that one..I've used underwater cameras before..),and can shoot in low light which my other older digital didn't handle well...going to shoot with it on my bike handle occasionally too!, it'll take me awhile to work the bugs out as I'm really busy with life stuff...getting a new driveway and garage floor soon. I'll be able to ride from the street right into my garage! I won't take cement for granted anymore! HAHA!!

I was looking at that very camera earlier today. It's nice and compact and has a very solid feel to it. When you get some time on your hands let me know how many shots you can take on a battery charge or somewhere close if you don't mind.

Trekker- I noted that you hail from NY. I am going to be in the Adirondacks the last week in July. I haven't made any reservations for camping yet. Do you foresee a problem or should I book something now...something with a kayak rental nearby...do you know any near Tupper lake?
I have never been there before.
I will be with a group of Aero riders the next week for our AAR trip thru NY/VT/NH and Maine that I created. Other bikes can attend if desired. If you are free you may want to consider joining us!

Hey KB,
Whenever I've camped in the Dak's, I've always stayed at State campgrounds or backpacked. I don't know much about the Tupper Lake area, but do know there are not any state campgrounds right there. I highly recommend the State camps and they are easy to reserve a site online via ReserveAmerica.Com (http://www.reserveamerica.com/camping/map_of_campgrounds/r/browseMaps.do?topTabIndex=CampgroundMap).
I bet you can find all sorts of businesses that rent canoes & kayaks there. With just a short search online I found a few, and they are most likely willing to reserve a boat for you for a fee. :D At the least you might call to be sure they are not going to be renting all their boats to some large group of Scouts that week! That happens.
I suspect that will be a busy time then. Making reservations is probably an important thing to do if you want to be with a group. If it's just you or a small group I would imagine getting a site would be easy. The Black Flies should be just about gone by then, so all you'll need to worry about is plain 'ol Skeeters. You will want to take it easy thru the Dak's... lots of deer, small critters, slow moving RV's, a little sand in some corners.... and PLENTY of great views.
I know this isn't much, but I hope it helps a little.
Thanks for the invite to the other ride. My dance card is full this season between school, work, chores (honey-do list), and some car camping with the family. There is never enough time! I am allowing myself one long moto trip this year, and that is to WillVille in Virginia in mid-May. I may get away in September for one or two weekends, but that is up in the air right now.
