Has anyone had any experience traveling with side bags on their tank? I ran across this and they looked useful http://www.roadgear.com/catalog/index.cfm?Series=2&SeriesTitle=Luggage
28 liters of additional space that wouldn't hit your knees. I wonder how a magnetic tank bag would like having that webbing under it?

I don't know if you have a Tractor Supply out there, but they have some tank panniers for ATV,s that work fairly well also. I think they cost less than $40.

Yupper, the first picture. They have two different sizes. The biggest set will hold a lot of stuff!!! The only reason I know about them is guy here in Canton got a set and mounted them on his KLR.

The only reason I know about them is guy here in Canton got a set and mounted them on his KLR.That'd be me... they seem to be fairly well made, probably not water proof but they should be very water resistant. If you're loading lightweight stuff in them, they shouldn't affect handling noticeably.

Your first link (http://www.tractorsupply.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay_10551_10001_29017_-1______?rFlag=true&cFlag=1) are the ones I have. They come with a shock-cord and a couple of hooks to attach the bottoms. It seems to be very flexible in how you hook 'em up, I just attached them to my crash guards for now. The only down side I've noticed is that I have long legs, so my knees tend to squish the bags... keeps my knees warm though ;-)

wolfman luggage makes tank saddlebags

They do, but they're very small..
I like the Aerostich tank panniers http://www.aerostich.com/catalog/US/Aerostich-Tank-Panniers-p-16412.html, or the KLR650.com http://www.klr650.com/tankpanniers.htm copies of the same.

Both hold a lot o' stuff, keep the wind/bugs/rocks off your legs, and are fairly water resistant, too.

Here's the set on my KLR.

And, as you can see, I have nothing against Wolfman stuff.. That's a Wolfman Alpha bag that wraps around the bike behind the rider.. Good quality stuff, but the tank panniers are pretty small..

I ended up cutting the center out of mine to better fit my '08 KLR:

I only paid $27+tax or so for mine, must have been on sale.

Tractor supply has saddle bags for horses made from heavy textile for about $20 last time I was there, they would work great on the tank.

I have a set of the Tractor Supply ATV tank panniers and a set of the Aerostitch tank panniers.

Here is the Tractor Supply set on my DR:
http://land.smugmug.com/photos/298027865_x6Tii-S.jpg

There's a round hole in the strap/band that goes over the top of the tank that helps secure the set of panniers. If your fuel tank has a lip that sticks up or if the gas cap sticks up above the level of the tank top, that will help locate the bags. If your tank's cap is flush with the top of the tank, you may need to find some way to keep the bags from sliding back. Clear as mud?

The orange bungee cords that run under the bags are for securing them, also.

Each bag has two big zippered pockets and a small zippered pocket. They hold a lot of stuff.

I think I gave $30 or so for the bags. :run1:

I also have a set of Aerostitch tank panniers (I wish I had known about the KLR650.com ones:( ). They were, if I recall correctly, about $120.

Here they are on the DR (with the TS set as rear bags):

And on the GS:http://land.smugmug.com/photos/334893231_UMnBE-M.jpg

I like the Aeristich panniers because they mount using a couple of hook-and-loop straps over the tank, and I can adjust how high or low they ride. They also have bunjees with hooks to locate and stabilize them. Each one is basically one big compartment.

While I like the price of the Tractor Supply bags and the amount of space they have, I really like the Aerostitch set (though, again, I wish I had known about the KLR650.com ones).

Hope this helps,
Chris

I'm new to this forum, but not new to MC camping. Before our trip across country on Route 66 last summer I bit the bullet and had a custom bag made by LindaT, http://www.customtankbags.com ,to fit the GL1800 we ride. The Gold Wing has some interesting lines and most universal tankbags just aren't the answer (just my opinion). I got the optional panniers for the set up and am amazed how useful they are. She makes them for all setups and has picture galleries for many models of MCs.

I have really enjoyed gleaning from this site. Thanks

When I was fretting over how to pack my gear, this thread inspired me. I envied all you folks' open space for bag-hanging alongside your tanks but alas, my ST1300 just won't hold them. Then I stepped back and took a nice, long look at the bike. I noticed that since I always ride one-up, there was a lot of dead air behind my legs. I googled 'bicycle panniers' and was able to fill that space. You wouldn't believe all the choices that are out there for bicyclists. If you ride a bike that doesn't have the space limitations that I do, you have even more choices. It takes a little creativity and some modifications to make them fit, but I know you guys are up to it.
