Earlier trips I had WAY too much stuff packed and strapped on the bike, so I've made considerable effort to downsize my gear. I now have a Eureka Backcountry 2 tent that packs to 15" long, and down sleeping bag that packs even smaller, and I try to leave home the stuff I never end up using.

I keep the sleeping gear in a separate waterproof bag strapped to the seat. I have room in this bag for an extra jacket or other clothes. The key here is this gear does not get packed with anything that might be wet. Notice I am also using Rok Straps.

The top case holds all the sundry camping gear with room for food. The large black stuff sack is a large parawing tarp that I can strap on to the seat with the sleeping gear bag. That can open up even more space for food as needed.

The left pannier holds my tool bag, the sling chair, and has room for clothes & stuff. (That sling chair will most likely be replaced with a kermit or equivalent).

The right pannier holds my tent, with lots of space for clothes and stuff, (clothes will go into waterproof bags).

The waterproof bag with the sleeping gear. Simple. (I would like to add a cot someday, just not a huge packed sized beast or one that costs $millions).

Top box with gear- stove & square nesting pot, kitchen set, coffee perk, mug, bottles, folding saw, rope bag, rain jacket, parawing tarp. (not shown- mess kit, personals kit), (I cut a piece of closed cell foam to fit the bottom of the box for padding).

And the new two man tent, a Eureka Backcountry 2 that packs very small. Not enough height to stand up in, but I need small pack size.

The tankbag holds gloves, maps, a first aid kit, camera, and what-not.

You may have noticed the snow along the driveway...... sigh..... I can't wait for more consistent warmer temps!

Thanks Guys. And yes... I am suffering from cabin fever! :p

I can always find room for beverages.

And I'll let you know how well this pack system works soon. I plan to go on one or two local overnights with a buddy so we can work out gear and riding details. Headed to Willville Camp in Virginia in May.

Funny you would say that.... I keep thinking about a few things I forgot to put in- flashlight, folding cooler, fanny pack with my hiking gear....

What I'm trying to avoid is the pack mule set up I had last year. ;)

Really looking to sharing some campfire with you Gordon.

It'll be great to see you guys again and telling lies around Will's fire will be fun.

With all the ride routes that have been posted (at ST-Owners.com) I'm thinking of making a week of CampSTOC.

Looks like there will be enough day rides to last for at least that amount of time.

If it works out I'll be leaving Mobile on Sat and arriving at Willville on Monday evening.

Anybody else...anybody...Ferris?

Whats in the walrus stuff sack? Is that the tarp? Which model is it?

I'll try to post a picture of mine in the morning before I go. I'm way more into the Jed Clampett style:)

It is an old MSR parawing tarp. It's similar to the current outfitter wing, but not quite. It came with god-awful poles which I need to replace with Kelty poles. I'll try to get a good pic the next time I'm set up & using it.

:D That's exactly what I'm trying to get away from! When I rode down to Georgia two Springs ago I had way too much strapped onto the pillion seat and it felt unruly in the twisties. Plus... I have always had a bad habit of taking along "just-in-case" stuff that never gets used.

I've actually been trying to implement a less-is-more attitude in all aspects of my life with some degree of success. Been purging "stuff" from the house, yet it still seems cluttered!

So what was in your walrus stuff sack originally?

Hmmmmm.... that is the original sack. Maybe I misspoke. Maybe it is not an MSR brand tarp. It's been a while since I bought it (about 10 years) I got confused. :o But, it IS similar to the MSR tarp.
