What kind of trailer are you thinking about (eventually;)) getting? Cargo or camper?

I think its great! At some point I plan on making my own trailer. Its not as if you have to tow that trailer around all the time. But you'll have that opption. Just think of the weight you'll get off the bike while at the same time being able to bring along more.
Which camping chair will never be an issue again. Go out and get that Eddie Bauer BIG GUY folding rocker. Trying to fit it on the bike will never be an issue again.:D

Depending on the cost of the cartop carrier and harbor freight you might want to consider a piggybacker (http://piggybacker.stehltow.com/). It's basically what you are trying to do and probably ends up being twice the cost but you don't have to put any work into it unless you want to change something around. Just depends on if your time is worth the difference in cost or if you just feel like building something, which is a great feeling in itself.

Only because I have pulled a home made trailer, I will add this. The leaf spring suspension on these make for a very bouncy ride for whatever you have in the trailer. The deluxe Piggybacker is what I would go with. It has a torsion axle which is much gentler on your whole rig. Less bounce to the ounce.

+1, that would be the one I would get. I don't think harbor freight offers a torsion bar trailer... I don't think so anyway.

If they do, they don't have one at my HF in Canton, all the ones they have are leaf spring. I'm contemplating building a single rail m/c trailer to haul the KLR behind the Wing. I saw one on TWT, but it was just too wide to be pulling behind another motorcycle.

You can check on Graigs List in your area for CAR TOP CARRIER. There are usually several in the Dallas area in the $25 - $75 range.
Most who build their own remove one leaf and run the tires at a reduced PSI. That seems to take care of the excess bounce.

While I don't know about reducing the tire PSI... I do know that many who build their own cargo trailers from the HF kit do remove a leaf. AND, be sure to install the tongue at the longest extension possible. A longer tongue length will minimize any "wobble" of the trailer.
search for the Delphi forum on this subject. There is a boat load of info.

Piggy backers looks really nice but it seems like he is going up on his prices
Piggy backer with straight axle $695
Piggy backer with torsion axle $895
or
Harbor freight trailer $140
Northern tool torsion axle set $139
Car top carrier from free to (good boss) $200-$300

Here's something I found, a site for just motorcycle trailers. There are many and some of them you can buy just the running gear. This is what I would doas Im all set on building my own box.
http://aerobourne.com/motorcycletrailerindex9.htm
Check out this one called "The Piggy Backer". Its just $695. Yea I know, its got leaf springs.
http://piggybacker.stehltow.com/#Specifications
I just went through them looking for the one I favored and couldn't find it. It was just the running gear. Had torsion arm suspension and dual disc brakes. Will have to go back later and take another look.

That one looks pretty nice, it seems to have some pretty fair sized springs for holding the top up.

I'm building a trailer just like that one. Harbor Freight frame for $139 and car top carrier I got for $80 on eBay. You can find them on Craigslist.org used for $80-120.
I'm making my own trailer hitch as well, I just bought a Lincoln welder :)
This is what got me started: http://www.gadgetjq.com/trailer.htm

Yep I have that page bookmarked :)
I asked my boss yesterday about his carrier and he said he would get the info for me but he left this morning for Charlston SC so I wont find out until next week about that. I have already put a 1,000 rear spring on my bike and have some pregressive springs to put in the front that should help handleing
BTW Welcome Downeyman

Tx,
First off Thanks for recommending this site. :) (Now I need to find time to go thru the older posts....;) )
We have been riding for a few years now and with a little more spare time are also going to be moto camping :tent2: ...
We picked up a PiggyBacker last fall and it's been great... Tom & Belinda are good folks to do business with. We ordered the Std 8" wheel and I asked to exchange the tongue for the longer one that came with the Xl and they did it, no questions asked.. It pulls great & cuts just a smidgin off of our MPG..
What ever you decide go with, selfmade or off the shelf, have fun & enjoy:D
We're Going to :tent5: ...
Thanks again for the site link..

It brings back memories of a buddy of mine's first attempt at trailering..
I have a homemade job with leaf springs and a cartop carrier. I bought the whole thing years ago for $100, and it's got zip for miles on it..
Anyway, he had a mount made for his Venture, and he and his wife on the Venture, and I on my R100RT headed for Colorado.:D.
We packed the trailer as we figured it should be, with the cooler of beer centered over the axle..
After 2 miles, we figured out that tongue weight was a good thing.. :p
He discovered two things during that trip..
#1. With the wife, a ton of gear, and clipping along at 80mph on I-80, he got better mileage with his truck.
#2. His wife will sing the entire Def Leppard cassette into the intercom, if allowed..
In reality, the trailer was wonderful.. It chewed only a touch into his fuel mileage, and we found that if he kept the Venture down below 70 the mileage was much better than at 80-85.. It was also nice to have food and beer chilled in the cooler, as well as not having to stuff the air mattresses/tents/and his wife's things on the bike.
I should get my trailer back from where ever it's at one of these days..
