I picked up one of these Gerber Camp Axes at Cabelas for $35.

It's a very tough, sharp, durable axe and can be used as a tent stake mallet as well.

The only thing I didn't like was the cover it comes with did not cover the top tip of the axe
so I filed it down and now it's perfect. I stil pack it in my saddlebag away from stuff I don't
want accidentally cut. However, the cover is very strong and uses a velcro enclosure that
shouldn't work itself loose under any condition.

The pic you have above shows the Back Pax (the one I have read guys recommending) but the Cabela's link doesn't show or list it. Wierd.

I fixed it, they put the back pax in a separate category for some reason...

Just an update - we used this axe a lot on our recent 14 day camping ride and it was great to have. You never think you'd need an axe but it worked well at splitting logs and making kindling for fires. Also, the other end works great for hammering tent stakes.

I found the Back Pax at Gander Moutain today. It was $29.99, you can thank me later for saving you $5.

A while back I stumbled onto a Gerber Pack Axe that also had a small knife that stored in the handle. I have found that I use the axe quite a bit for everything from cutting wood to driving and removing tent stakes. Good stuff.

They had that one too. I carry a pocket knife so decided I did not need the axe with it. I think it was $10 more. I plan to use mine to for driving tent stakes and removing them.

I have the pack axe, love it, super small yet big enough to do the job, easy to pack, between it and my wyoming saw I can make a redwood sweat LOL, got mine new on ebay for $19.95 plus $6.00 shipping
