Discussions of stolen items while camping in this thread (http://www.motocampers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1009&page=4) got me to thinking. How about a battery operated alarm with 2 motion detectors, first (most sensitive) hits and the device plays a snoring sound (or your own recorded sound...12-guage pump shotgun racking? ;-) the second hits and another sound is played ('huh..who's there') or something similar. Perhaps with a light option.
Kinda a camp friendly alarm, false alarms shouldn't be a big problem cause this device shouldn't make enough noise to be heard much beyond your site anyway.
I've got contacts for a place that builds custom electronics (we use them here for a lot of things). At this point I have no idea what it'd end up costing, initial costs (design/prototype) are estimated around $3k or so.
The theory is that most stuff stolen is done when you are gone, and just making the possible thief think that someone is around will be sufficient in many cases to stop it.
I'd like one myself, for those times when all your gear is sitting in the tent (shower time for example)... last thing you want is your $$$ riding gear being stolen.
Does this sound at all like a feasible idea? Any thoughts on what something like this would be worth? Assuming it's compact enough to be suitable for motorcycle camping.
Biggest concern at this point would be getting it to sound real enough with a small speaker.. That'll take some testing.

Nope... sorry, but with everyone I've ever talked to in person or online. There have only been a very very small percentage that have ever had any issues.
If someone needs my tent so bad they will steal it then more power to them, I hope they use it and I hope it ends up making their life better. I'll just get more gear.
Been on many camping trips over the past 7 years, never had any issues.
Of course, I also fart in my sleep... probably keeps most theives, Bears and Rabbits away.
If you want to feel secure, sleep with a shotgun.. but, just let me know so I don't camp anywhere near you just in case you're having a bad dream. LOL

I'm only thinking about when I'm not there. But you're right, I've never had a problem either... it does seem extremely isolated.
This is why I ask ;-)

Well, I'd rather they took stuff when I'm not there... :-)
However, let's say you have one that has a shotgun loading. What if it does scare them away but they just decide they need to bring their shotgun just in case?
If you can get an idea of what it might cost and some options for sounds, it might be something someone would like.. I don't know. I guess it just depends on what it is and what sounds would trigger it.
I've been at some campgrounds where the tree frogs were louder than a Harley.

Ask yourself, "Is there a large enough market to support this venture?"
I bet there are not enough people to buy this type of product... but that's just a guess.
As Mellow said, if someone takes anything they must really need it, or perhaps it's just an opprtunistic grab. At any rate it's cheaper and easy to just take care of your stuff- put it away (in the tent or on the bike).
How many people do you know with a pre-rocorded dog bark device that claims it keeps the thieves away?
And maybe someone might be inclined to steal the security device! :D

LOL.. or steal everything BUT the alarm... that's just wrong.. more wrong than the stealing itself... okay, it would be funny though.

I think my main concern would be $1000 or more worth of riding gear sitting in the tent while me and the wife are off getting a shower or something. Although I'd imagine the odds of somebody stealing things from your site during the day are pretty much negligible. Could always lock our gear up to the bikes, I've got 2 6' straight cables that we run through jackets/pants/d-rings on boots/helmets when we want to explore on foot.
Never mind, silly idea.....
My wife suggested we smear poop all over everything, so nobody would want it...probably a better idea..albeit stinky and unsanitary.

As Joe said, I too have never had any issues and have not heard of any from people I know. There really would not be a market for this.

I suggest you just take care of your stuff (don't leave everything out all over the table), put the camp gear in your tent..... and go ride!
Most times I've camped (car or bike) it's been in nice places with lots of nice folks around. Campers tend to be just plain nice folk, and friendly and watchful.
I'd worry more about leaving food in my tent and coming back to a critter hole chewed through the fabric.

Everything I can't live without, meaning continue on the trip, I keep on the bike. The rest, I doubt adds up to much more than $300-$400 new and probably half that used.
If someone walks off with all of it, I can hit walmart and replace it all with cheaper stuff that will still last me years.
Now, if someone stole my Shoei RF1000, THEN I'd be pissed.

I just leave the cheap stuff out, that way if it walks away, I get NEW stuff?LOL
