On my ride to Big Bend I will add this. There is one area I might need it. I sure need that bigger tank that is on backorder.

I might still get some soft saddlebags but not sure I will need them or use them.

What's that black round thing on the rear of the frame? Looks like 2 hose clamps holding it on the sub frame.

How are you liking the bike so far? Packing job is impressive.

Are you carrying tubes or a patch kit?
Which tire did you decide to use? Looks pretty knobbyish.
Man, I wish I was going!!!:(

I like it a lot but I still need to get better at riding it off road. I don't need a lot of stuff when I'm out on a ride. I find that most stuff people bring never get used so I bring what I need.

I have a tube and a patch kit but they are in my Camelbak Mule. I have a tube to fit the front but can be used in the rear if needed.
I have a DUNLOP D606 on the rear and the front is a Metzeler Karoo. I want to see how they hold up going to Big Bend. I hope I can get 2000 miles out of them. If not I'll give you a call and you can come pick me up.

That load is awfully high on the bike... looks like a wheelie popper for sure. I'd definitely consider getting saddlebags to replace that big bag on your rear fender.
OR Put the bag on the rear of the seat (you can lean against it), and put the gas can behind it. That will shift more of the weight into the "load triangle" which will keep the bike more stable front to back.

I hear what your saying about being high on the bike and the picture makes it look worse than what it is. The total weight in under 30 lb and once I get a lighter sleeping pad it will be nearer to 25 lb. One trip I did have it mounted long ways and more on the seat but when you?re riding off road you need to be able to move your weight around and not be locked in your seat. I?m still debating about saddlebags but no one makes any yet that will fit it. I?m sure this is not my final set up but it close.
Thanks for the input.

I've seen a lot of guys bend up some aluminum bar stock to fit any convenient bolt locations already on their bikes and using these to tie soft saddlebags to. Just a thought.

Hey Rick,
Now that you're back from your trip, do you still like the duffel bag up high, or are you thinking about some saddlebags.
Thank, Guy

The bag on the back is a non-issue, even with the gas tank I could not even tell it was back there. However when I do not take the gas tank with me I do have it center over the back wheel. It's funny I have done over 400 mile of hard dirt riding with that bag on and it seemed harder to ride with it off at first. :D
Trailace is the main bag that you use the same Cabela's water proof duffel that Mellow did the review on? If so what size did you get?
Thanks,
Pete.

Pete, Rick is doing the TAT right now.. but, yes that's the exact duffel I did the review on because when I got the backpack version I sold it to him. It's the regular size 24"L x 12"W x 12"H.
Thanks for the answer Joe, I have been thinking about getting one to use on my KLR but wasn't sure it would hold enough stuff. It looks like it will do just fine!

You can put a lot of stuff in it. With the straps on top, you could even use those to secure a 2nd smaller bag if you needed to.
Thanks for the info Joe, sorry I didn't answer sooner, I had a lady do a left turn in front of me on the 30th and I hit her while riding my KLR. Nothing broken, just a lot of bruising and some road rash. I was very lucky but now I'm finding out all the places a fifty year old body can hurt.
Thanks again,
Pete.

Glad your OK Pete,
I have had a few close calls lately myself. Poeple really need to be educated on how to share the road with motorcycles.
I myself scared the crap out of a kid on a sport bike the other day in a parking lot. I saw him in time but he wasnt sure I saw him and I think he to go home for a wardrobe change.
Sometimes the smaller bikes can be hidden in a blind spot or behind an A pillar and drivers simply dont see you.
Be careful out there everybody.
Once again glad your OK. Is there a new bike in your future or just some new parts?

+1, glad you're okay.. it's a jungle out there.
Thanks guys.
drz400 I have been laid up and haven't seen the bike yet, the insurance adjuster called to ask where to send the bike so it is going to a shop now to be looked at. If it is written off I will replace it with another KLR. I really enjoy the bike and don't think for the money that there is anything as good.
Pete.
