I've noticed some of you talking of taking a dutch oven on your rides. I used to be a Scout leader and have used and own several cast iron dutch ovens, but hadn't considered taking one on a ride. So I was wondering do you all take cast iron or do some of you use aluminum dutch ovens. I might consider an aluminium one for carrying on my dual-sport, maybe strapped to the front fender like a spare tube bag. That should start some conversations on the road.

Thanks,

Guy

I have a 12" for the Bunkhouse and an 8" for the tent. They are both cast iron. I baked biscuits both mornings at Lake Tawakoni. I don't think the front fender on my KLR would support the weight of either one!!!

It's fairly easy to add a stiffener to the front fender on pretty much any dual sport bike... that being said, I'm sure there's not enough support for anything bigger than a 1/2qt d.o. ;-)

I really meant for the fender thing to be a joke, but it would be funny looking. I was more interested if anyone had used an aluminum dutch oven and what they thought of it. Even heating, ease of cleaning, that sort of thing. I was thinking of something like this.

Thanks again,

That thing doesn't have legs on the bottom to hold it above the coals. Liable to burn the bottom of whatever you're cooking in it. Both my cast iron ovens have three legs on the bottom.

Yes, but I think I could pack the 10" and not the 12" even though it has the legs on it. I've used legless ovens before by sticking 3 large nails in the ground to hold them off the coals. This has always worked for me when I had used up all the legged ovens.
