I never thought a mallet was something I'd need camping because there
are always rocks around right? Not..
I've used one similar to this and it's one of the best pieces of equipment I have.
You can't always find a rock and with the handle it allows an even faster setup in
hard ground. The holes in the ends can be used to extracting tent stakes quickly
as well. This one I found at Campmore for $3.99, it's about a foot long and packs
very well.

I looked at those at Dick's. How well to they drive stakes in hard ground? I was thinking I may need a camp axe for that.

Joe has one and it works great!

The mallet is pretty tough. It's not as tough as an axe but a good alternative if you don't want to bring an axe.

I bought one of these just today for $3 at Dick's Sporting Goods. Thanks for the idea Joe!
I believe it will work very well. I especially like the holes in its handle that can be used to pull the tent stakes out of the ground.

It works extremely well for that, especially when it's cold, nothing hurts more than trying to pull a cold stake out of the ground.

Since this thread started I have been meaning to show the mallet I lightened for the wifes backpacking.

It looks to be the same except for color, bought this one at Target and was packaged by Coleman. Now its a bit shorter and lighter and still works great taking up a little less room.
And yea I know, I really do need to find other things to do with my time.

I enjoyed my tent mallet very much until it decided to make it's own way in the world.
I lost it at CampSTOC this year.

I went the other way. I picked up a Gerber Pack Ax with a knife that lives in the end of the handle. Yes, it was more money. But I can use it to drive tent stakes, pull same, chop wood, create kindling, use as a hammer and also do whatever you want to do with a knife. It takes about the same space as the mallet.
Cheap, light and durable.
I got one in white.
